Myers-Briggs and the INFP... a Blessing or Not ?

By

In a recent post comment, I mentioned to Jan Evett that I could actually "hear" her pronouncing the word "Bee-You-Tee-Ful."  She also read a comment I made to Jennifer Bukaty, that I could actually "hear" her saying something.

Jan said:  "Karen, you must tell me.   HOW you can hear the sound of everyone's voice on AR!  I CANNOT FIND that button!  You can hear Bukaty ... and now me!!!  I can't hear anyone's voice.  Now... back to that hearing the sound of her (my) voice thing... PLEEEZEEE tell me how you do it !"

OK Jan:  Here it comes:

If you are familiar with a "personality inventory" called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I usually test out as an INFP.  The I is for introvert, the N is for intuitive, the F is for feeling and the P is for perceptive.

My Introvert-Extrovert usually ranges towards the middle... but usually more Introvert than Extrovert... although my introvert is natural, and much of my extrovert is learned or acquired.

On the Intuitive-Sensing scale, I pretty much "pin" the meter on the intuitive side of the inventory.  Usually up around the 90 to 95% scale.  So... I have pretty good intuition.

The next pair, the Feeling-Thinking scale, which has to do with how you make decisions, I again pretty much pin the meter on the feeling side... about 95% of the time.

And last, on the Perceiving-Judging scale, I am somewhere in the middle, usually more on the perceiving side, and less on the judging side.  So, MBTI-wise... that makes me an INFP.

Are you sorry you asked yet ?  LOL.

So... with the I and the P so off the deep end so to speak, sometimes when I am reading something someone wrote, I can sometimes "hear" or "sense" or "feel" what they are saying... sometimes better than they can.  It is not something I do on purpose, or even try to do.

Sometimes I try to get away from it, but I just cannot.  Bottom line... I just test out as being intuitive and perceptive.  They are not scientific qualities that one can measure, by any means.  And, sometimes when I think I am intuiting or perceiving something, I am all wet and off base.  So, I guess I really have no idea whatsoever what I am talking about... LOL.  But, that's the best I can do.

OK Jan... time for you to call the guys in the white coats to come and get me.  At least I'll have some peace and quiet, and will be able to take more naps.

Hi Elaine:  Sure, a good imagination always helps.  And of course you get it, Elaine.  It's that Intuitive-Percetive quality that you have.  Many women have it.  And, perhaps we can get a discount from the guys with the white coats.  Buy one, get one free ?  Thanks for commenting.  I hope your Topanga market is doing well.  Take care...

Hi Karen:  Some call it "women's intuition."  Don't be scared, Karen.  That just shows how "special" you are.  I wonder, since so many more women than men are intuitive and perceptive, maybe it just goes with the territory of being female.  Hope things are going well for you.  Take care.

Yes Missy:  You are getting tired.  Your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier.  Start counting backwards from 100.  When you wake up... you will remember none of this.  Now here... please sign all these referral forms... LOL.  Missy, of course you're tired.  You have been giving birth to a whole new phase of your career. I hope things are going well.  Take care.

Hi Ruthmarie:  Your comment above says you took the test and came out an  I - N - T - P.  Unless it was a typo, an INFP, as I tested out, and an INTP, as you did, even though three of the four letters are the same, the difference between  my "F" snf yout "T" would be enough of a difference for our two types to not be a match.

If you truly did test out as an INTP... I can make my next Myers-Briggs post to describe all about an INTP.  Just give me the "go ahead" and I will put it together.  I am gad you were inspired.  Nice to see you again.  Take care... stay warm...

Ruthmarie:  Sorry you are not feeling well.  I was down for three weeks myself in November... not a good thing.  I was trying to figure out how upload you some chicken soup, and here is the best I could do.

From what I know from you, I thought you were much closer to an INTP than an INFP.  Very big difference between the two.  I will put that into my Myers-Briggs cauldrom and see what happens.  Try he chicken soup... I hope it helps.  Take care... hope you feel better.  By the way... that is not my picture stirring the soup.

Hi Gayle:  I agree with you.  Sometimes some things are best left unknown.  I must admit, though, that it is probably something I would miss if it were to disappear.  Thanks for commenting.

Ginger:  I am afraid I know exactly what you are saying.  The Myers-Briggs is a time-tested tool that has been in use for about forty years, or more.  It was developed by a mother-daughter team, Katherine Briggs, and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers.  It's credibility has never been questioned.  Just think, Ginger.  In the 1600's... women with high intuition were often burned at the stake as witches.  Does that make you feel better, or worse.  Me... I am honored to be related to that long-ago sisterhood.

I guess that makes me your total opposite.  I tested out as an ENTJ.     -I still think we would get along great.  Have you ever heard of the DISC profile.  Another cool tool - more geared towards effective communication between different personality types.
