What are the advantages of Oak Hardwood Floors for your home in Pound Ridge NY?

oak flooring in Pound Ridge NY 10576Oak is the most popular species of hardwood flooring here in Pound Ridge NY. If you see hardwood in a home, chances are it's oak.

Why is oak hardwood flooring so popular?

1. Oak flooring is very affordable since it's grown in the US and is  abundant. Oak hardwood tends to be less expensive compared to the other species (such as maple, hickory, brazilian cherry, etc). And, in Pound Ridge NY, it's very readily available to get unfinished oak hardwood flooring. Often, unfinished oak flooring (that is refinished and stained on-site) is a bit less expensive than prefinished oak, especially as you go wider in the plank size.   oak hardwood in Pound Ridge NY- gunstock

2. Oak flooring is the standard of hardness, and oak tends to hide scratches well. On the Janka hardness scale, red oak has a hardness of 1290. While there are many woods that are harder than oak, all hardwood scratches and dents...and because of oak's strong graining pattern, it tends to hide the scratches and the dents better.

3. Oak flooring is easy to refinish and it accepts stains very well. With oak, you can go very light (e.g. natural or golden oak), all the way to a very ebony, or anywhere in between. You can do brown tones or red tones, pending your preference. It's easy to change the color down the road if have a change in heart color-wise, or if you are moving into a new home. You can go from light to dark and back to light again, pending on your preference.  Oak accepts stains much more easily vs. pine or maple flooring.

4. Many customers want to extend and match the hardwood they already have for a consistent and larger look (and usually oak is the flooring that is already in the home). Often, our customers in Pound Ridge want to add oak to an extra couple of rooms (or even to the whole 2nd floor) and they would like to match the color and graining to what they already have. By doing this, it makes your space look larger and more coherent. Also, oak hardwood flooring tends to match the other hardwood you have in the home (e.g. stair treads, banisters and other trim.

Good morning Debbie -

Another informative post on wood flooring.  We were discussing the pros and cons and wood flooring in our home office last night.  We're worried the rolling chairs will wear grooves in the wood as we home office and are this area 10 -12 hours a day.  Watching and learning from your wood flooring knowledge my friend.

John - Yes, rolling chairs can be a disaster with wood floors - due to the stuff that gets caught in them.  Either change the chairs, or put some sort of "mat" underneath the area where you roll or avoid hardwood in this room.  A mat could be a flat area rug or some sort of plastic (even a vinyl/fiber floor that could be cut (and not adhered to the floor).

Pat - You are welcome.  I hope this is helpful for you when the time is right.

Debbie:  Funny that you mention how many people want to extend the hardwood flooring in their home to include other rooms.  My wife and I are considering doing that very thing in our home.  Actually replacing existing hardwood and extending, as we don't like the selection of wood in the family room.  This is just another example of wishing you were closer to Illinois and Chicagoland.  Oak flooring has always been my favorite ... and seems to remain a perennial favorite over the decades too.  As always, great info ...

I wish I knew all this when I had oak flooring installed upstairs.  I would have loved to consider the wider plank style.
