Fridays Fotos: Fish Tank Bully

By
Real Estate Agent with Oikos Realty, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach Florida

My fish tank showing a blue African Cichlid, 2 tiger barbs and a golden gourami. The cichlid was given to a breeder because he terrorized the other fish. They are very territorial and aggressive but very smart as well. I'm sure he's being taken care of and I know my tank is healthier again :-) Sometimes you have to make a change to your environment to achieve the results that will make everyone happy.

Blue Cichlid, Tiger Barbs, Golden Gourami

The Blue Bully. My tank now has 4 tiger barbs, 1 golden gourami, a spotted shark catfish and a pleco. They all get along just fine!

That was clever Erv!  I would love to have a fish tank but it is just too much work for me. If I could afford a professional to come clean it regularly then I would have a monster tank at home.

Hi John,

This is a terrific salt water fish tank. I used to have one and I spent months getting the PH levels correct. Then I bought a bunch of beautiful colorful fish and I remember the clowns were my favorites. While I was on my honeymoon, the person babysitting the tank put a coffee pot inside the tank to warm the water and burned up all the fish and cracked the tank. I was upset but had to move on as it was an accident. I just look at tanks from a far now and your tank is beautiful.

Yes change is often necessary to get the right setup.

I tried a fish tank for about a year to year and a half and discovered I am quite good at killing fish!

John - I will never forget that during a stressful time in my life, I bought a fish aquarium.  I had it in my thoughts that watching the fish would be relaxing.  Included among the fish I had, was a little monster no larger than a quarter called a Ruby Scat.  That darned fish was beating up and tearing fins on most every other fish in the tank.  I was so stressed out after several days of it, that I flushed him:-)

John, your blue African Cichlid is so beautiful.  Too bad he's such a meanie!

Hi John, I used to have a pretty good collection of tropical when I was growing up. They sure were a lot of work. The blue bully looks like he is as you described, a bully. He would have his own tank with a few other bullies and they tend to be more passive with their own kind. Or as my little broher used to say, let's see em fight and may the best man win, LOL.

Hi Sussie - A 20 gallon tank isn't that much work and is very soothing to watch.

Kristen - That's a shame about the hot pot in the tank. You should try again. BTW - My tank is freshwater.

Hi Myrl - That can happen but if you consult your local fish store, they can usually set you up with compatible fish. I thought about flushing the blue bully but put an ad on Craig's List instead. He now has a more compatible home.

Hi Patricia - African cichlids are the next best thing to colorful saltwater fish but they do have a mean streak.

Hi William - I had a whole tank of blue and yellow bullies and they never got along. There was always one dominant fish who ruled the tank. Live feeder shrimp didn't stand a chance in there.

Believe it or not it was an employee of the local pet store, who recommended that first batch of fish.  They were "supposed" to get along.  This was before Craig's List days, or I would have likely used that option rather than the toilet.  But I was so upset with him after his last escapade, that I flushed him:-)

Myrl - I guess the fish store employee didn't have enough knowledge to advise you correctly. I can understand the stress because it happened in my tank. I have flushed fish before too but try to avoid it. Maybe you should try again :-)
