Senate Passes Bill to Restore The STAR Property Tax Rebate Checks

Great news for NY homeowners! Senate has passed legislation as of June 6, 2012 to restore the sorely missed STAR property tax rebate checks, which were eliminated in 2009. This bill would provide $202 million in property tax relief to seniors and 1.2 billion to middle class homeowners. The plan is to have it begin in 2013-2014 but is still not set in stone. NY state home owners pay the highest property taxes in the nation clocking in at 96% more then the national median! The actual amount of the checks will be determined by the homeowners income and local school district tax rate. For those that don't know, the STAR program applies to only the school portion of your property taxes.
