I live in Atlanta, GA along with 4+ million others. Atlanta has all the hustle and bustle of a Chicago, the culture of a San Francisco, and the fierce independence of a Denver. Atlanta is also fortunate enough to have Piedmont Park

This beautiful "common ground" green-space was purchased by the City of Atlanta in 1904 and converted from a fairgrounds to a city park in 1909. This conversion expanded the city limits thus creating a larger city with an enormous public green-space. The popularity of the park began the clamour for modern amenities. The first permanent building was called a 'Rest Building' and was converted in 1996 to the Visitor's Center which hosts a wide range of public and private events. Soon after followed the tennis courts and the bath house (which evolved into the modern swimming pool) In 1979, the park leased what is referred to as the high grounds to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens This structure and its gardens help to round out the park by highlighting the beauty of nature that may be overlooked by a simple walk through the park. It seems to me to connect the modern concrete, steel, and glass of the city architecture with the agricultural past of the area. In 1979 the golf course was closed which freed up 70+ acres for park goers to use called the meadow.

While there is rigorous development on every inch of space that can be purchased around the park, Piedmont Park remains a true Urban green-space for all to enjoy. The modern park today hosts numerous festivals including The Dogwood Festival in April, the Atlanta Jazz Festival at the end of May, Gay Pride in June, the Montreux Jazz Festival over Labor Day Weekend, the Atlanta Arts Festival in September. In addition to all of these events there are softball fields, soccer fields, and a dog park (for all of our four legged companions; "look no leash") Please note however, that these events are all looking for temporary new home as extensive restoration work is being done and during that time, all of 2008, no large festivals will be permitted but the park will remain open. There is one Saturday morning tradition that will continue this year from May through October and that is the Green Market which features locally grown produce and flowers as well as local arts and crafts. Even with the unfortunate cancellation of all major festivals in Piedmont Park this year, this emerald jewel is a wonderful getaway in the middle of an urban jungle.

Here are two links to two different organizations who promote, in their own way, the preservation and use of this wonderful urban park:

Rich, it looks like a beautiful piece of Earth. Quite a facility. Nothing quite like an outdoors jazz festival to bring the folks out into the fresh air.

Andrew - It really is quite a beautiful place. All day there are people enjoying the park. From runners to yoga classes, the park hosts all whole need a breath of fresh air. One night of the week during the warm months, usually Sunday, their is a large screen erected in a section of the park and people come with dinner baskets and/or drinks and watch, free of charge, a classic movie. Thanks for stopping in! Ya'll come back now, ya hear!

Danny - Glad you liked it. I agree that you definitely have to walk, jog, run, skate, blade, or bike in the park to appreciate it fully. But for those in the colder northern climates, just close your eyes and listen to the jazz and feel the warm scented air on your face.

Linda - Though I am newly transplanted, it was a homecoming of sorts. I spent many a summer here as my father lived here on four seperate occassions since the early 80s. My younger sister was even born here! To me, there is no city I would rather live in.

Rich, great post on the park and the festivals. We love Atlanta and the next time we fly down to a Falcons game, we'll have to do some sightseeing.

Great job giving a quick history of the park and what is has to offer today. Loved the photos of the events and when they're held. It makes one want to run through the grass barefoot or just lie in the grass and stare up at the clouds...on a hot day of course!

Christina - Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you liked it!

BLR Guy - Our park is great! It is a bit of work doing the pictures and links but it is fun!

Gayle - Yes it does! It has been melting quickly but a fresh coating of snow always looks like a Norman Rockwell painting! Not quite this much snow!

Cris - Glad you liked it! One of the best things about an urban park is that it gets to be the gathering point for so many great events. There are numerous other small events that are held there throughout the year.

Mike -Atlanta is my favorite big city. I have visited many of the major metros in the US and they all have highlights but ATL is my favorite!

Georgiana -Pictures say so much and I love using them. On another note, my father sold his home in the metro-Atlanta area and moved to Kona this past August!

A truly lovely park. I am glad that we are blessed with several parks in Houston. My favorite park within a park is the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park. This space was designed by a contemporary Japanese landscaper. Such spaces are a great retreat.

Frank - It really is a fantastic greenspace. I look forward to reading about the park you mention if you decide to blog about it. Thanks for commenting!

My youngest brother lives in Houston and I have a younger sister in Dallas!

Rich - very beautiful and I love the pictures! I would enjoy coming down for the Jazz festival. It is well attended? The only part of Atlanta I have ever really seen is the airport and the expressway -- they don't do the city justice! You have shared some nice parts of the city!

Mary - There are two very well attended jazz festivals in ATL each year. One is at the end of May and the other is in August. The crowds really turn out as do world class musicians and southern hospitality, where our accents sound as sweet as our ice tea tastes (or you can have a mint julep, its green).

There is a wonderfule B&B, called the Ansley Inn, Me Heading To Catch The Train For A Braves Game In Front Of The Ansley Inn! just a couple of blocks off the park and within walking distance of the trans and buses that will take you virtually anywhere in the city! There is however, restaurants, shopping, bars, nightclubs, bookstores, theaters and of course the park itself within walking distance of this wonderful B&B!

I hope next time you visit Atlanta, you will have the chance to see more of what this GREAT city has to offer! If you need suggestions or ideas when in Atlanta, give me a call or send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Rich, what beautiful and loving descriptions you paint of your home... My Atlanta experience is also limited to the inside of the airport, but you may have given me reason to change that.... Are the Jazz fests going to be moved elsewhere in Atlanta this year, or be canceled altogether?  Would love to be there for the FEST!!! And the B&B looks like a perfect place to sta:-)
thanks for sharing...

Inna - As far as I know, all of the festivals are relocating to other venues in Atlanta. The B&B is incredible! The made to order breakfasts served in an historic dining room is out of this world. They have wine in the evenings! We of course have all your mainstay hotels but I say, treat yourself and have an experience to remember!
