I'm taking a six week course about the power of connection.  Ruoff Home Mortgage here in Fort Wayne is putting on the class for about 12 Realtors and 6 of their own loan officers. 

I am normally not a big fan of these types of things, but I got the invite and said "What the heck!"  I'm glad I did.

The first class was yesterday and I already got schooled on something. 

 

I talk too much. 

 




By doing a few exercises about initial engagement, I realized that I am quick to dominate a conversation.  I'm friendly, have a firm handshake, I look people the eye when I first meet them...  and then away I go!! 

It was a humbling and eye opening meeting for me.

Guess what my intention is this week?  It's showing interest in others before expecting them to show interest in me.  :)

Truly over the years I've noticed that realtors just talk way too much for their own good. Glad the class was informative & worthwhile & that was just the 1st one!  I was with an agent at a closing yesterday & I wondered how he can even close a buyer/seller because he never shut up.  Every second was taken up by a 'story' that he had to tell.  Problem was, with all that talking, how can the buyer/seller get a word in edgewise?

Hi Jared, the best advice I have heard over the years is that we have two ears and only one mouth for a reason, listen twice as much as you talk and you will always do well.

I attended a "goofy" seminar many years ago that has stuck with me more than any other class I ever attended.  It was about mirroring people (long story short, make it all about them and try to act like they do so they feel important and have a real connection to you).  We also learned about the different types of people (visual, audio & kinesthetic-touchy/feely) and how to handle each type (and also figure out what we were - I am 50/50 visual/audio - need to work on the touchy feel stuff).  And last but not least, and the one I have never mastered, was how to tell if a person is lying or telling the truth by their eye movements.  I could never remember which eye position meant what.

Jared:  I'm chuckling, as my wife tells me this fairly often too.  JMO, but I think we can have two personalities too .. be somewhat bi-polar regarding our "talkativeness".  Socially, I'm easy going .. but certainly not a dominant force in conversations.  When you get me talking about mortgages though .. completely different story.  I think in my mind that I believe that there is SO much info they need to have, that I get motor mouth trying to educate them.  My excuse anyway ...

GREAT points your raise with this post .. and lots of food for thought for us all.  I hope you continue to report what you are learning in this class ...
