Leaf Raking Advice in Anticipation of Hurricane Sandy

Gaithersburg, MD – (October 25, 2012)   In anticipation of potentially heavy rains and high winds associated with any effects of Hurricane Sandy, Gaithersburg's Public Works Department is urging residents to either suspend or modify leaf raking activities this weekend and into early next week.

If it is possible to delay leaf raking until after the effects of the storm have passed, that would be preferred.  If you are raking leaves, please do not rake them into gutters and streets.  Rake them into grassy areas behind the curb line to allow rain water to flow into catch basins.  This will help prevent catch basins from getting clogged during the storm, and will also help prevent street flooding.  If you already have leaves raked in the street and/or gutter and can move them onto grassy areas it would be appreciated.

The City is collecting leaves now through the last week in December.  Pick up is generally made every 5 to 7 days, usually on regular recycling days, which vary from neighborhood to neighborhood.  For more information visit the City's website at www.gaithersburgmd.gov<http://www.gaithersburgmd.gov>.

This City of Gaithersburg press release is posted on ActiveRain as a community service.  Character counts in Gaithersburg.

Hi Roy.  Hurricane Sandy is looking very scary.  Our oaks have 90% of their leaves.  Sandy will change that.

We have stopped all of our yard cleaning crews and will handle clean up once the storm is over. There is no point to do any clean up, as it is just a waste.

Keeping the catch basins free of leaves will certainly reduce the chance of flooding Roy, nice post and good reminder for folks in the path of the storm.

Good Morning Roy, That was a question I was pondering as i can get a foot of downed leaves when they drop. I am picking up anything that could turn into a flying object with the wnd though and have cleaned out around all my drains and will keep up with it up to storm time. Great advice for this upcoming nightmare for all of us in the east.. Have a great Friday

The weather doesn't sound too promising for us here. We just heard on the TV that this "could be the storm of the century!"

Thanks for stopping by.  We are in a storm watch mode.  The governors of Maryland and Virginia have declared a state of emergency and I expect that several others will do the same.

Be well prepared if you are in the path of this very dangerous storm.

This would be the weekend that a neice is getting married here in Maryland and many of the guests might have their travel plans disrupted as they return to their homes.

Well, we raked leaves twice yesterday and more came down overnight.  Leaves are fluttering past my window as I type. Utility workers and Red Cross volunteers in western PA are 'on call' to travel to storm ravaged areas as needed.

Let's hope Sandy turns out to sea rather than coming ashore.  Stay safe.

Hurricane has passed us by. Big waves this morning. Raking now is a wast of time. Assuming the storm comes, you will have to do a clean up afterward.

Your comments are much appreciated.  We have a beautiful sunny day in Maryland.  It is a very good time for residents to prepare for the incoming storm.
