This morning, Sandy was still centered far south off of North Carolina’s coast, and is technically far from Eastchester, NY 10709. But, this unprecedented storm – a Nor’Easter, with a hurricane crunchy center – is coming our way tonight into Tuesday.
Sandy, or our so called “Frankenstorm” is only expected to dump 2 to 4 inches on Weschester County as of tomorrow afternoon and just in time for another stormy Halloween night. Countywide flood watches will remain in effect, with coastal flood warnings for Mamaroneck, Larchmont, Harrison and Portchester through late Tuesday afternoon. That includes both sides of the Long Island Sound shore and our Rivertowns along the Hudson River. Mainly, “Tropical Storm Sandy” will become a wind event in our area by tomorrow night, according to NOAA and national meteorologist’s warnings.
Rain could be heavy at times in Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Scarsdale and throughout the lower Hudson Valley, according to local and national forecasts for this monster storm! Winds are increasing from 30 to 50 mph by late Monday, with gusts up to 80 mph into Tuesday night, especially along the Sound and coastal towns.
By Wednesday, the rain should linger as scattered showers and leave the Westchester County area by nightfall…we HOPE!
NOTE: The American Red Cross has opened five emergency shelters in Westchester County. Shelters, staffed by Red Cross volunteers, are open at:
· Port Chester High School
· The Boys and Girls Club of Mount Kisco
· New Rochelle - Albert Leonard Junior High School
· Yonkers - Lincoln High School
· Longfellow Middle School - Mount Vernon
These Westchester County ARC shelters are free and open to the public, and have food and water available, along with cots.
The Red Cross advises anyone who wants to take advantage of one of the shelters to bring the basic items with them:
· A blanket and pillow, or a sleeping bag
· Important personal documents that you safeguard and bring with you to the shelter.
· a change of clothing or two, including casual overnight clothes
· Any prescription medications you may be taking
· Bring baby food and diapers for your young children
Red Cross Pets Policy:
The Red Cross does not accept pets into its emergency shelters except in the case of service animals for people with disabilities. The policy is meant to accommodate as many people as possible in the shelters, including those who have pet allergies, asthma, other health issues, or even a fear of animals, according to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross says the shelters will remain open as long as needed until “Sandy” leaves Eastchester, NY 10709 and the lower Westchester County region!
Please stay indoors, in interior or lower level (flood proof rooms) and remain off of the roads, so that emergency service pros, EMTs and 2nd responders like us can do our jobs for those in need…with THANKS!
