Ellicott's Country Store is located in the heart of Ellicott City's Historic District, on Main Street, and is one of the oldest duplex buildings in the country. It was built of local granite in the 1790s and is also called the Walker-Chandler Building after the two families who occupied one half of the house each.
Ellicott's Country Store has been a family-owned and operated business since 1962 and celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Owner Enalee Bounds opened the store with her late mother Mildred Werner and her sister, specializing in a variety of antiques, furniture and unique gifts and accessories.
According to Enalee, the store and business have survived floods and fires, one of which brought about an extensive restoration that exposed the original beams and led to the discovery of the fireplaces - 2 on each floor.
The four-story building features nine uniquely decorated and themed rooms such as the English Hunt theme and French Country Gourmet. It is also home to Ellicott Interiors - operated by Enalee's daughter Lissa Bounds who shares her passion for interior design and the preservation of Historic Ellicott City.
All visitors are greeted warmly by Enalee Bounds who is just a delightful person to chat with and a pleasure to meet. Enalee is full of stories and very much part of the Ellicott's Country Store experience.
Historic Ellicott City, MD is said to be haunted and although visitors have talked about hearing or feeling 'things', Enalee hasn't "bumped into a ghost yet."
I stop by Ellicott's Country Store every time I visit Historic Ellicott City and - if you haven't been there yet - strongly suggest you do, too!
