Inside Ellicott's Country Store, one of the oldest duplexes in the US

Ellicott's Country Store is located in the heart of Ellicott City's Historic District, on Main Street, and is one of the oldest duplex buildings in the country. It was built of local granite in the 1790s and is also called the Walker-Chandler Building after the two families who occupied one half of the house each.

Ellicott's Country Store has been a family-owned and operated business since 1962 and celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Owner Enalee Bounds opened the store with her late mother Mildred Werner and her sister, specializing in a variety of antiques, furniture and unique gifts and accessories.

According to Enalee, the store and business have survived floods and fires, one of which brought about an extensive restoration that exposed the original beams and led to the discovery of the fireplaces - 2 on each floor.

The four-story building features nine uniquely decorated and themed rooms such as the English Hunt theme and French Country Gourmet. It is also home to Ellicott Interiors - operated by Enalee's daughter Lissa Bounds who shares her passion for interior design and the preservation of Historic Ellicott City.

All visitors are greeted warmly by Enalee Bounds who is just a delightful person to chat with and a pleasure to meet. Enalee is full of stories and very much part of the Ellicott's Country Store experience.

Historic Ellicott City, MD is said to be haunted and although visitors have talked about hearing or feeling 'things', Enalee hasn't "bumped into a ghost yet."

I stop by Ellicott's Country Store every time I visit Historic Ellicott City and - if you haven't been there yet - strongly suggest you do, too!

What a great local blog, Andrea.  There are a lot of buildings with those same qualities around here.  That staircase looks a lot like the ones you'll find in older homes in this area.  Very nice.

Andera - Old buildings and their history is always fascinating.  Here in California there are several towns that were build during the gold rush and before.  I always enjoy exploring and finding out about the history of those places.  Thanks for the post.

I'd love to visit and look for ghosts.  Of course I generally find them when I'm least expecting to do so.  Looks like a lovely place and I just love when I visit some place new and am greeted by a friendly and chatty person.

Why thank you Mike! Next time we come down to Winchester, we'll have to make sure to explore it a bit.

Hi Steve, totally. I find myself drawn to historic subdivisions and buildings and always wonder who lived there and when and what their lives were like. We used to own a historic property in VA and I miss it. Perhaps some day we'll be able to call another one home. I have never been to CA (except the airports) but I would love to see the towns during the Gold Rush.

Hi Tammy, hubby actually went on a Ghost Tour on Ellicott City's Main St. last year. He's convinced that he's heard 'something' and even felt a tug on his pants one time we where there. I got him a digital voice recorder for his birthday .. I suspect we'll be trying it out sometime soon :-)

Thank you very much Brenda, it's a lovely place to visit and very unique. I like its mix of antiques, furniture and home decor but also just love taking in the history of it all and the original features .. the fireplaces, beams, floors etc.

Andrea, WOW!  Love historic cities and their buildings. It is even more enticing to know the family's history.  That makes the buildings come alive.  I will definitely put downtown Ellicott City on my list of places to visit on our next trip to MD.  (We have family & friends in Frederick and Baltimore areas.)

Hi Diane, Historic Ellicott City is one of my favorite places to visit!

Hi Mary, very true. It's one of the things that makes shopping on Main St. USA so special, the interaction with the store owners who not only welcome every visitor warmly but share bits and pieces about local history as well as the building's history.

Hi Myrl, Historic Ellicott City is so very charming. Thank you!

Hi Melissa, thank you very much! When you make it up here someday, please let me know and I'll sure you around!

Hi Andrea, I never saw this post till Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 featured it in her Tuesday Travelogue post today. Ellicott City sounds like a place we don't see much of anymore, would love to visit in person.

Elliott Country Store has faced more than its share of challenges and always rose to the top. These must be some great people who run this business. May the owners and you too Andrea Bedard be blessed.

Ellicott Country Store is a beautiful store and most definitely worth a visit! Last time I was there, the upper floor/attic was closed off but I didn't get the chance to check with Enalee whether or not this is temporary.
