Bathroom advertising. Are you getting your name out there... or are you circling the drain?

A few weeks ago I got a text from a friend that is going to be buying a home in the next six months.  She was at the Y and was going to the bathroom.  She texted me and said "Um.  Jared?  The lender you referred me to is watching me pee!"

WHAT??

She went on to explain that this particular lender was advertising his information on the inside of a bathroom stall.  I chuckled.

Fast forward to today.

I was with a past client having lunch.  She excused herself to go the bathroom.  A few minutes later she texted me and said that "Bob the Lender" was watching her pee.

I laughed again because I knew exactly what she was talking about.

Then I started thinking...  is this the best way to advertise?  On a bathroom stall?

I've been to restaurants and a few pubs where I have seen advertising right above the urinal, and have been a bit turned off by it.

I'm enjoying a private moment doing something that isn't quite sanitary, and I see a call to action from a giant advertisement right in front of my face?

Meh.

What are your thoughts?

These lenders are really getting their names out there, but during some pretty private moments.

Are they expecting you to jot their name and number down at that exact moment??

I hope not, but if so...  there is plenty of "paper" around to write on.

To make yourself stand out from the crowd try the ad locations for advertising.  You never know it might work.

Congratulations on your feature! That is one catchy title, with a funny story to go along with it. Honestly, I don't think we would advertise in a bathroom stall, but if works for someone that is great.

Have a great day,

Jeff

Not the way I would choose to advertise, but have not problem with those that do.

Not all marketing messages appeal to everybody but marketing is used solely to get somebody's attention with a call to action. So, while it may not have compelled you to call the advertiser, it did compel you to take action and comment about their advertisement and look at the forum you chose to get their name in front of up to 300k consumers. Finally, how much did that ad cost the advertiser to get the exposure seen by thousands of consumers? I'll wager it was less than a cent per person, so would you consider doing it, I would?

How weird. I haven't really seen these loo advertisements lately. Maybe they have mostly fallen out of favor.

Well, that's pretty wild. But so is texting someone from the bathroom stall.

hmmmmm - weird, and not sure how tasteful, but I'm the 67th person to comment on the article that many more have read, so the publicity MAY be worth it....

I'm thinking this is not the place I want you to remember my name from.  "While I was in the bathroom I saw your name"  NOPE! That is not what I want a new client to say to me.  Gotta be a better way to set yourself apart from the crowd.

That's definitely and interesting way of advertising.  I've seen it used at bathroom urinals, but not in the stalls.

I saw a news story a while back about toilet paper with ads printed on it which is also a unique approach.

I think the use of text marketing tools like Jared is using is a good tool to use in this type of advertising so its easy for potential clients to connect with you.

Thanks for sharing this Jared.  I loved how your friends text messages describing what they were experiencing in the bathroom stalls.

I see those ads. Advertisers are always looking for up front space!

Haha, I like what Martee, #66 said.  I'm not sure I have an opinion one way or another about advertising in bathroom stalles, I've honestly never really thought about it.  I'd probably not do it just because I don't do any kind of advertising like that at all, but who knows :-) Kasey

Good morning Amanda Christiansen ,

Glad to see Praful Thakkar re-blog your post. I missed it! Very humorous and no I don't think this out of box advertising is a good way to attract clients. They are getting talked about for sure!

Good Morning Amanda - I would say that the approach is way out on the fringes.  I wonder what their market research says.

Amanda, I saw your post when it was first written. It made me laugh. Still does.

That said, I would not "stoop" to that type of advertising.

I remember learning back in Advertising class the stats on these marketing techniques and have never considered them.

It is amusing when I see them though, and often wonder how many of these advertisers renew their adds and how many are just throwing away money.
