I Had a Skeleton In My Closet~Is it Time to Clean Out Your Closet?

By

Is it time to clean out your closet? This is not a metaphor;I mean, is it really time to clean it out? I have lived in my current home for over 10 years. I am very diligent about keeping my kids' closets clean. They grow so much, so I pretty much donate everything they grow out of once a year.

For some reason, I have been avoiding my own closet. It is a walk-in closet, but it is not huge. My husband and I share this space, and like most couples, I get most of the closet being the female. Over the past few months my closet has gotten out of control. This is hard for me because I like to be organized. There is just too much JUNK in the closet!

I have been asking my husband to help me clean out this crazy closet and he finally agreed. It was getting so bad that I couldn't find a single thing and I would find myself spending way too much time digging for things.

The process is over (and 9 bags to Goodwill later), I feel free! I literally feel like a huge weight has been lifted. It is great to simplify things. I finally did what I tell my sellers to do every time I list a home.

Here is how I did it. It really didn't take as long as I expected.

1. I pulled everything out of the closet and put in the bedroom. Wow- this was a task.

2. To make it back into the closet, I had to have worn it in the past year-no exceptions. I threw out everything that I was saving "just in case."I had 6 pairs of black pants, but really only wore 2 of them.

3. Once everything was out of the closet, I vacuumed and cleaned all areas. I put all the shoes back in place. I then put the clothes that made the cut back in.

4. I refolded everything on the shelves and put back neatly.

It looks like we hardly have anything in our closet compared to the way it was before, but in reality, most people only wear about 1/4 of the clothes hanging in the closet. It has also saved me time in the morning trying to find that one black shoe that always seems to be missing.

Another thing I realized when cleaning out my closet is that my husband has more shoes than I do. That is really good to know. I really must rectify this situation!

And yes, I really did find a skeleton in my closet. I got him out and now life is good!

Wow. We tell our clients to do this when their house goes on the market. . . Nothing like doing it yourself so you can have something to share with them on how to get it done. Sounds like you both did a great job!

Last year, as a gift to me, my husband totally redid the closet with all of those fancy drawers and shelves. I may not need to clean the closet for a long time.

Definitely great advice. I pull everything out once a year. If I haven't worn it in a year, I get rid of it (donate, give, etc).

Kristi, my closet is definitely due for a purge! I like your year rule and I'm sure there are many items in the closet that will come under that category. Thanks for the encouragement.

Kristi:

I get the feeling of exhilaration when I glean your closet for seldom worn cloths. I love the space in my closet and I can actually find something after the cleaning.

Kristi, I must be the only woman alive who has a smaller side than her husband. I recently did this same thing but I only had 5 bags to Goodwill. I think I need to hit my husband's side one more time.

Kristi, I love that you found a skeleton in your closet! Nine bags to Goodwill is admirable! I have heard people say that if you have not worn something in 6 months, it should be donated. Although that sounds extreme, it is probably a good idea. You have inspired me!

Great post Kristi. Our closets are very easy to clean out. They are both so tiny that it takes about 4 minutes each.

Great feeling isn't it? It's a shame that your husband has more shoes than you do - that simply can't happen. Happy shopping!

I do this twice a year, every year! It really is a great feeling to clear out stuff you don't need or want (or what is no longer "you"). I find that cleaning out my closets generates a desire to clean out my office, clean up my data base, etc. Helps clear the mind to focus on what and who's important.

KRisti, congrats on job well done, and thank you for inspiring us with your post to do the same (or at least attempt :))

BTW, my husband has WAY more clothes than I do... Is it a sign of new times?..

Against my better judgement, my husband and I are remodeling our master bath so everything HAD to come out of both closets! In order to have an alternative closet to use during the remodel, I had to clean out two closets in the secondary bedrooms. So, four closets were emptied. One pickup load of miscellaneous and asundry items were taken to Second Mile Mission and what survived went into temporary storage. During the whole process I kept thinking "why do I own this much stuff that I don't use?" It was a very cleansing feeling to give it away! Now, on to the office!

Gosh! Thanks everyone for stopping by! The skeleton was a one of the many halloween costumes I was saving "Just in Case." I also got rid of a couple of hippie costumes and some other crazy stuff.

It did keep me from shopping though, because I had no room for anything else. HA!

A cluttered closet is only good for one thing- the budget!

I really enjoyed giving all of those bags away because most things were in great condition. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Yes! I hear you! I just hired a ! deep cleaning service, which got my home clean in all those nooks and crannies that I never get to. And, then I didn't feel good about my closet, and the catch all closet in the guest room, so I went in a did exactly what you said. I pulled everything out, cleaned them, and only put back what I need/use. Oh, NOW my house is clean!

Kristi, I'm in the process of moving the summer clothes out to put in the winter things. I need to do just that. Hmmm.
