How to Get Rid of Paint
Leftover paint is a nuisance to get rid of, which is why so many home sellers leave all their paint cans behind when they move out "in case the new owners want to use it." Trust me, the new owners will NOT appreciate the thought. So how do you get rid of it? It depends on the amount of paint and the type of paint.
Let It Dry
If the can is not too full, try letting the paint dry out. Just take off the lid, let it dry out, then throw the can away. This may take several days (or weeks), and the smell might be too strong for some people to handle. So if that won't work, try something else.
Paint Something
When you're planning to sell your home, it is a good idea to touch up the paint anyway, even if it has been recently painted. Go ahead and use it all up on the walls. You can also use up old paint by painting it on plywood, cardboard, newspaper, or other paintable surfaces that can be disposed of easily.
Donate It
Check with organizations like Habitat for Humanity near your home. They may accept paint donations!
Don't Throw it Down the Drain
Paint down the drain is NOT a good idea, especially if it is oil-based. Do the environment a favor and do not contaminate soil or water. It could also clog your drains, which would definitely be a problem.
Hazardous Waste Collection
Check with your town or county for hazardous waste collection information. Many communities have certain days throughout the year when you can bring your hazardous waste for disposal or recycling.
Whatever you do, DO SOMETHING! You sure don't want the buyers to hold up the closing because there were dozens of paint cans piled up in the basement at the final inspection. It may take some effort, but if you get rid of all your old paint before you move, you'll be glad you did.
