What's a 'Granny Pod' you ask?

By

There may be a viable solution for Baby Boomers and GenXers, who have managed to get the kids through college, only to find it necessary to help mom or dad out, with nursing home care.

This afternoon while looking for material on the www.aarp.org website, I came across interesting information about “Granny Pods” - or backyard cottages.  These high-tech alternatives can offer another choice to a nursing home.

These prefabricated homes start at $85,000 for a 12x24 foot house.  They are equipped with advanced safety features, webcams and cushioned floors.  For more information about this innovative idea, you can access the AARP story via: “Granny Pods for Loved Ones.”

I believe someone else on AR may have mentioned this but I've never seen one. That sounds like a doable alternative.

Be a good idea, if the Local Zoning board will allow it.  I know in my  area, try as they may...doesn't happen in my area.

Myrl,

I have seen those,  One of Ron's cousins helped her daughter with a home in France that had a separate unit for her to spend time with the grand kids...A

The household make up is changing to a multiply generational household and we may very well see it extending into the future.

Good luck and success.

Jill - With the rising cost of nursing home care, these pods, or similar home alterations could provide a good alternative.

William - I agree!  In many areas zoning is a possible hindrance to this solution.  However, building an extra room on to a home with similar amenities might not be.

Alexandra - That sounds like a wonderful and idyllic thing to do.

Lou - When I visited Amish Country in Lancaster, PA, a few years ago, I found that many of the Amish live that way.  They don't ship elderly parents off to nursing homes, they house them within their homes instead.

Granny Pods, larger homes, finished basements, added rooms and other approaches will be necessary as economics and health force multlple generations to live together.

Have an outstanding week and be sure to have your camera in hand for the special moments.

Myrl, I like this idea....I know if my parents were still living I would NOT put them in a nursing home.

Hi Myrl, I have edited all the thoughts I had on this subject and none of them are suitable to leave here as a comment. LMAO.

William - I suspect I had some of those same thoughts, but refrained from posting them.  However, I will give a little.  When I saw those "cushioned" floors, I immediately thought, why not just buy Granny a bounce house???  And, for those webcams. . .There are some things you might not wish to catch Granny doing.  Especially if she invites a boyfriend over for the night. . .tsk, tsk!

Roy - You're absolutely right!

Rebecca - Nursing home care is an issue that many folks likely struggle with.  If you can keep parents at home, it is often a more ideal situation.

Good Morning, Myrl. I have heard about these pod homes, and actually have wondered about putting one in for my father-in-law. Thanks for sharing the info, and their website. I will go check them out!

The name doesn't sound very inviting, but I do like the concept of having housing that can be put veyr close to family like that.
