Welcome to the San Jose Japantown, CA Community !

San Jose is a melting pot of many cultures and communities and San Jose Obon,Small_2012 one such community is the Japantown district in the northern Central San Jose area, which has thrived for over 70+ years.  While many San Jose residents may not know where it is, it is a secret gem to those in the know.  Generally bordered by the streets  3rd Street, Hedding  Avenue, Empire Street, and 8th Street, the core “downtown Japantown” includes popular restaurants (not just Japanese!), stores, market, the Buddhist Temple, a business association, Boys and Girls Club, senior center, farmer's market, and even a museum (Japanese American Museum of San Jose) and more.   Certainly this community is rich with history and the museum is worth viewing.

Some of the more popular attractions in Japantown are the cultural festivals the community sponsors, including the Obon Festival, Nikkei Matsuri,  and even a Beerwalk (yes!) which is frequented by many thousands each year who love to eat the delicacies and participate in culture of the Japanese American experience.    Click for calendar of events.  Both my family and I love to go to these events and sample the food court.  My personal favorite is the buttered  corn and chicken teriyaki… not to be missed!

A prime and safe location, the area is in the midst of a redevelopment, especially in the past 10+ years as newer condos, apartments, and stores are upgrading and replacing the old where houses, buildings, and homes and there is still plenty of parcels to continue this revitalization to be sure.  Even the old cannery has been replaced with a very inviting townhouse complex sure to please most people.  Don’t get me wrong, there are still many older, charming homes with well-maintained and manicured landscapes that add a charm all its own. Interested in homes in Japantown?   Click here to view some homes in the area.

An older community in transition, the new buildings are bringing in the new generation with children, and the local kids are served by San Jose Unified School district including Horace Mann Elementary, Grant Elementary, Peter Burnett Middle School and San Jose High but be sure to check with the school districts.  Be sure and visit my website for additional school information and ratings.

JameswithMotheratObon_2011_zps9a697080The residents of Japantown are friendly , multi-cultural, and take pride in their community.  The area,  as well as all of Downtown/Central San Jose, is very near to freeway access, Silicon Valley, schools, Light Rail, Airport, the other many downtown festivals, and more.  New shops, markets like those off of Coleman Avenue are a welcome site for the residents of Central San Jose.  As a Japanese American and resident in the metro San Jose for 31 years, I am glad to have this community to visit with friends and family, enjoy the culture and food, and share the fruits of our cultural diversity.    Visit San Jose Japantown… a little town with big spirit!  Domo Arigatou!

Welcome to the San Jose Japantown Community and enjoy.
