Are you feeding your worms properly? Are they happy?

Did you think I was kidding about the worms?

In the Sacramento area, there are many fine gardeners, and many of my friends grow beautiful flowers.  And now is the time to be thinking about the garden you will plant or fertilize this spring.Worms can be the experts to help your garden thrive!

On January 11, 2013 from 1:00-2:30, you can attend a free Worm Composting Workshop at the Rancho Cordova Library, 9845 Folsom Blvd, Rancho Cordova CA, presenting everything you ever wanted to know about using worm castings to enrich your compost and thereby enrich your garden.

UC Master Gardeners will discuss "Composting for the Home Gardener", presenting information about backyard composting and worm composting techniques.
Composting is the key to a lush garden
The Master Gardeners will present a workshop with tons of information on worm composting. Worm composting is easy, fun, and an activity for everyone!  Worm castings are called “gold” for good reason. The workshop will cover the basics of worm composting--the bin, the worms, feeding worms, and harvesting worm castings. Bring the entire family to this workshop!

The
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources ("UCANR") website does give a few helpful tips if you are out of the Rancho Cordova area or can't make the workshop.  For example:

--If you're composting with worms, keep the bin protected from the cold
with a blanket or towel and move it near the house or into the garage.

--Minimize the amount of citrus you give the worms.  Happy gardening!

        And many more great tips.

UCANR has prepared an instruction sheet in pdf called: "The basic steps for creating a worm bin". It is found at:  http://ucanr.edu/sites/sa"cmg/files/153018.pdf.

You too can have beautiful healthy plants (and raise a lot of happy, healthy worms to help you do that).  Check it out!

And happy gardening!

There is something about a healthy compost pile that makes me warm all over Susan.

Susan - I need to attend this worm workshop!  Years ago, I introduced big Texas Night Crawlers in my yard.  I hoped they would help break up the soil.  What a mistake it has turned out to be.  Now they are everywhere.  This type of worm builds big bumpy hills all over the my lawn so if seems like golf balls are planted beneath.  I need to find out how to remedy this problem and start over again with the right type of worms.  I will say these night crawlers do a good job of breaking up the soil though:-)  I also have a compost pile.  My tomatoes seem to love it!

Myrl - Sounds like good timing for you then.  I always used to have a compost pile, but don't have one right now.  I'll miss this workshop, but I do want to start up again, and maybe do a better job this time!

Hi Susan,

I know exactly what you are talking about with worms in the yard. I have worms and they make the soil rich and I never use fertilizers that kill them. I try to take care of  my worms and when I am digging and find them, I put them in my pots of flowers. I would have enjoyed this workshop if I had lived closer.
