Teaching Amanda (A man to fish) Fische Part II

Teaching Amanda (A Man to Fish) Fische Part II -We have all heard the saying, give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for a lifetime, I like to add, teach a man to find fishermen that know what kind of fish he likes to eat and never have to fish again!

Real estate is a lot like fishing, we all need fish (clients) to survive, and we need them to be consistent, however unless we are out there fishing every day, eventually our freezer full of fish gets depleted. Now there are some very good fishermen out there, they know where their favorite fish are hanging out and they know when they eat and what they are feeding on, but they still have to go out and fish (market, door knock, call etc). What if you knew other fishermen that might be looking for the same fish but for different reasons, and what if those fishermen knew that you also wanted these fish and they were happy to bring them to your table once they caught them as well. Wouldn't that free up much more of your time to just eat the fish?

The really good Realtors, those in the top 20%, understand how and when to go fishing, but the top tier, those in the top 3-5%,no longer have to fish, they just get the fish delivered to their door, day in and day out, never having to spend money trying to get all their gear together (marketing) and strictly focusing on what they do best, enjoying the fish.

SO what is the shift that takes place with these very top tier agents, they have all discovered that finding their niche is absolutely critical, and that once you find your niche, you start attracting the fish as well as other fisherman that want to hang out with you. Another way to put it is, "Whats your Handle" what can people carry you around with when they leave you, if they dont have something specific then you are just another Realtor, however, if you have a handle that is easy to carry around for everyone you meet, then you are taking huge strides toward being memorable.

Think of a really good song you heard, you could not wait to share that with your friends, you may have even posted it on facebook or tweeted about it, this is a handle that is instantly carried with you. I still remember hundreds of songs from my childhood that all bring back special memories, this is what you want to be in the subconscious of every one that knows you, be memorable in a very good way.

When that old acquaintance from High School is thinking it is time to move into a low-maintenance golf lifestyle (my niche), then "bing" you immediately come to mind. The beauty is that even if they are just thinking about playing golf, you will come to mind, or if they hear of a family member or friend looking to downsize into a low-maintenance lifestyle, once again you will come to mind, because you have given them your handle.

Where it gets really exciting, is when you are meeting lenders, and title reps etc., and anyone else that says "how can I help you?" Just let them know your niche, let them know how different you are from the rest of the pack and they will start delivering exactly the type of fish you like, right to your door, sometimes they will even come cook it for you.

Thank you for the post, John.  I did not see the first one.  I thought that you were going into the past and giving instruction on how to use the microfiche machines.  Nice twist.

Hi John,

Thanks for the post and fine commentary. You are an inspiration and great teacher. Fun to read! I too believe in the "narrow your focus, broaden your appeal" mantra. Your willingness to share your insights and wisdom is most appreciated.
