It's time for me to write something about real estate in Carmel-by-the-Sea. How about the fact that finding a particular property can be a challenge?
THERE ARE NO HOUSE NUMBERS IN CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA.
For example, I used to live at 2 NE of San Antonio on 11th Avenue.
Translation: go to the intersection of San Antonio and 11th. Turn EAST on San Antonio. Face NORTH, and count the second house from the intersection.
This is totally confusing to everyone, hey, you MIGHT COUNT WRONG. Don't laugh. What if the 1st house is actually part of San Antonio and not 11th Avenue?
SO PEOPLE STARTED TO "NAME" THEIR HOUSE.
My house used to be named "Birdsong", so named by the lovely artist lady who used to live there. She would open up all the doors, and birds would fly through and, presumably, sing a lot.
Today, on my regular walk to the beach to watch the sunset, I took photos of some of the houses along my way. Mostly, they were right along the ocean, or pretty close. They are in no particular order, except the first one which needs a little explaining.
The home below actually has TWO names and always had. The north side is called Periwinkle, the south side Sea Urchin. A few years ago the owners made some major renovations which took a long time to get through the various permitting phases. The Carmel-by-the-Sea City Planning Department, and the rest of us, started to call it SEAWINKLE. I could not get close enough to take photos of the actual names and not trespass, so I am just showing the home(s) themselves.
AND THAT SUNSET? RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET TONIGHT.
