Fulton County has one of the most interesting shapes in terms of land mass.  It reminds me of a sideways mannequin or two funnels joined together at the ends.  As you are leaving downtownAtlanta (where those ends join), one of the best ways to take in the cities of South Fulton is to follow Highway 29.  Local people also call it Roosevelt Highway.  It was named for the famed President Franklin D. Roosevelt who travelled the route to reach his home in Warm Springs, GA. (Source: South Fulton Chamber of Commerce).

South Fulton Along Highway 29As you come out of downtown Atlanta on Interstate 85 South, take the  Langford Highway exit and then take the Lee Road exit and go South.  First stop in South Fulton is East Point.  Across from downtown East Point is a MARTA rail station.  Downtown East Point has wonderful little restuarants and other interesting shops.  One of favorite bakeries is in downtown East Point.

Still in South Fulton and leaving East Point, take a right turn and go over to bridge to Cleveland Avenue.  Follow Cleveland Avenue until you reach the Metropolitan Parkway intersection.  Turn right and you will be heading south into Hapeville.  One of favorite spots in downtown Hapeville is an old fashined soda shop.  They make the most delicious limeade with fresh lime juice, crushed ice and simple syrup.  Next door grabs a couple of cookies or a cupcake to fill your sweet tooth at Buttersweet Bakery.  Hapeville is home to the world's largest airport, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.

Next up in South Fulton is College Park.  The best way is to cross over the railroad tracks in downtown Hapeville and go west on Virginia Avenue.  Look for the right turn to take you back to Main Street (which is also Highway 29).  In College Park you can enjoy a variety of good places to eat and drink in the historic sites.  All of the streets are named after a college or university.  One of favorite places in College Park is The Feed Store.  Southern Fried Chicken or Gulf Shrimp and Grits, take your pick.

Continuing on Main Street, the next stop is Union City.  Downtown Union City has Mayor's Park where residents can walk around six times to get a mile in for their daily exercise.  Each of Union City's mayors are named on a stone monument there.  If you go over the railroad tracks, you will drive into the commercial strip of Highway 138 where many of the fast food spots have a home.  But I say turnaround and head back to Highway 29.

Your next stop in South Fulton is Fairburn.  Downtown Fairburn has great southern architecture.  Some of it was destroyed during a fire a few years ago, but the city is poised to build the space back with some new uses.  Enjoy good food (one of my fav spots for Mexican food) and leisurely walks along the downtown Fairburn corridor.  Venture to the west from downtown to Cedar Grove Road and you can see Tyler Perry's first big home - the one in the movie.  But come back again to Roosevelt Highway to continue the South Fulton journey.

Palmetto is the final stop for me in South Fulton though though Roosevelt Highway continues past Palmetto.  Palmetto is another great little downtown area.  Enjoy all of the wonderful green space in the area.  You would be hard pressed to know that a major metropolis less than thirty minutes away

Roosevelt Highway is an alternative in South Fulton to the hustle and bustle of Interstate 85 South.  Take your time and enjoy what each town has to offer in South Fulton.  I promise you will make some memories.
