Trash Pick-Up on President's Day in Crofton, MD

George Washington (Istockphoto.com)Tomorrow, February 18, is President's Day - a federal holiday.

The holiday was initially created by an Act of Congress in 1879 for the City of Washington, D.C. to honor George Washington on his February 22 birthday, but it became a federal holiday just six years later.  Another Act of Congress, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moved the celebration to the third Monday of February and also designated Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Columbus Day (second Monday in October) to a Monday, so Federal workers could have more three-day weekends. While the holiday honoring George Washington's birthday was not officially renamed in that Act, it has become known as President's Day - possibly because it falls between Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday.

Will there be trash pick-up in Crofton on President's Day?  Yes, both trash and recycle crews will be hard at work tomorrow on their regularly scheduled routes.  County libraries will also be open, but not public schools or Federal, State, and County government offices.

Banks, courts, post offices and senior centers will be closed, as well, and MARC trains will not be operating.  Metro rail and bus will be running on a Saturday schedule and Annapolis buses will maintain its usual Monday schedule.

It's always fascinated me about what is and is not going to happen on a federal holiday which isn't always a federal holiday.  When we lived in Clearwater, FL  I was shocked to see garbage pickup on Christmas Day.  Good information you are putting out there because you never really know whats open and whats not.
