It seems like we buy a house and spend all of our money and weekends into upgrades. Remove this, replace that, paint here, add this………and so forth. But are we getting more equity in our homes or not?

Here is a chart compiled by the California Association of Realtors who keeps statistics on remodeling homes.

If you are thinking about remodeling anytime soon, maybe this chart will assist you in making your decision on what room to do first.

Hi Cheryl, If I come across a place, I will let you know. I know basements are more popular in the east so that is not on here. I used to watch some shows where they remodeled their basements with Candice.....somebody....liked that show and she told how to get more bang for your buck.

Kristin what great information for your sellers and buyers...I find it so ironic that many times sellers do this when they are about to sell. They were perfectly content with how their home was for the past 10-20 years and now they want to fix the home up:)

Hi Endre,

I have a seller right now who wants to do this but I just do not think this market will give the seller the equity they are looking for. Decluttering, paint, maybe a new more modern light fixture or even a bathroom vanity but unless the rest of the home is turnkey, major remodeling is not cost effective just before selling.....in my opinion anyway.
