"Nothing in Life Comes Free" ...  just like the old saying goes

I'm sure you've heard the statement,

           "Nothing in life comes free"

Well, a blog I read today, written by fellow mortgage lender  Joe Petrowsky  on ActiveRain, reminded me of the wisdom and important lessons contained within this statement.

Joe had started the mortgage process with a new client by running the client's credit report.  His client had sought out the services of a credit repair company to help him improve his credit and credit scores prior to seeing Joe, so the scores reported on his credit came as no shock to him

The credit repair company had promised the client that they'd remove the issues showing on the report ... all bills and payments that the client did in fact owe.  The cost to perform this service?  HALF of what was owed to creditors!  The outstanding obligations mounted up to $5000, so they'd  given the credit repair company $2500 upfront to perform their magic.  Problems solved, right?

Well, I'm betting you know where this story is going.  Yep!  The only thing that disappeared was the client's money!

I've seen and heard quite a few stories much like this one.  But for me, the lessons gained from them don't so much revolve around being "ripped off" by fraudulent credit repair companies or any other servicers.  (Although the  "when it sounds too good to be true" ... or ... "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck" lessons are both valid and important to remember.)

No.  For me the lessons revolve around work ethicTrying to reap benefits too easily ... too quickly ... or when you really haven't done much to earn them.  This client thought they could throw money at their problems and make them disappear.

Now let me be clear ... I certainly don't wish this client's misfortune and outcome on anyoneNo one deserves that what happened to them.  But the real and long term solution to their credit problems will only be found in their own willingness and dedication to solving them and their personal investment in hard work, attention, and time.  That fact can't be escaped.

The truth regarding this matter is:

Gene, this is a great blog.  I think we have all come across these scenarios.  I don't like when vulnerable people are victimized by these type of companies.

Thanks, Kathy.  I think someone's radar should go up when they hear offers like this.  And we should all know that if it's that easy ....

These companies are mostly a scam.

They should all come with a warning:

DANGER.  This company may be dangerous to your financial health.

Gene, if they ask for money up front beware. This is something where throwing money at the situation will not fix the problem. It takes personal responsibility.

Gene, I always counsel buyers to go see someone like you who can advise them on what to do to improve their credit. Often I hear about their plans to "Fix" their credit with pre paid credit cards, paying off cradit cards, then they go and buy a car. It is a mess. People can get sucked in by these scams but how about Personal responsibility". Can your person really believe that paying someone half of what they owe. Emphasis on OWE, can solve their problems. Good Grief!!

Happens often, unfortunately..

I tell my clients all the time: if those repair credit companies ask your money upfront, walk away!

Great blog!

Gene: Thanks! We'd all like it to be easy and sometime we're genuinely surprised. But as you say most of the time it involves some toil and sweat. That also can feel pretty good when the outcome is positive. Take care.

This is too bad.  I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that if it sounds too good to be true....  It always, always is.

Joe:  Not just me .. obviously.  There are so many Lenders that will provide sound advice on this matter.  Many are here on AR, such as yourself.  You provided the inspiration for the post ...

Lenn:  Definitely!  The public needs to be educated about this ... and protected ...

Roger:  True ... and someone looking to scam seems to have a "nose" for finding them ...

Michael:  It's hard to come to that conclusion, but you're so right.  Sometimes the only cure is found in hard work and time ...

You're spot on, Nina!  When it comes to credit and finances, people need to quit looking for the quick and easy ...

Sally:  Yes!!  Who wouldn't LOVE that?  But you and I know the reality ...

Fernando:  The ironic thing is that most lending professionals provide this sort of advice and guidance for FREE.  Time and hard work take care of the rest of the problem ...  thanks for the thumbs up!

Carie:  I see the fallout from poor credit and bad record keeping all the time.  In so many instances, mortgage processing would go much more smoothly and quickly if it were seen to.  So much valuable time is lost too ...

Unfortunately true, Donna.  In most instances they can't.  If they're sincere in their efforts, they eventually will.  But it will take time and work to accomplish it ...

Evidently that was the case, Helen and Larry.  I'm sure they got fed a line about creditors "settling".

Inna:  You're providing great advice.  I hope your clients are listening!!  And btw ... new pic??  Very nice ...

Paul:  I'm sure parents have all told their kids much the same lesson.  And I'm sure most don't want to really hear it.  But ... it's true.  You enjoy your accomplishments more if you worked for them ...

Jane:  I think when it's financial problems, people tend to want a miracle ... and a quick one at that.  But you're right, it rarely if ever happens that way ...

Gene
