AHA - Gary Keller and Dave Jenks led a great session yesterday morning about the importance of MASTERMINDING . . . and another session in the afternoon for all 8000+ attendees about Gary's VISION for 2008 and beyond. It was difficult for me to shift mental gears and listen fully in ANY other sessions other than those two - There was (and is) SO much great stuff in those 4 hours of Gary and Dave that I'm going to be chewing for a while.
Gary is good at "Tough Love Talk" - GET OVER IT and simply BE! We have choices, Work within the environment and adapt as it shifts and shapes through time . . . or go away to an environment that works better for you. This is essentially "The Law of Two Feet" - If at any time you find yourself in a place where you are neither contributing nor receiving anything of value, it is YOUR responsibility to use your two feet to a place where you CAN contribute and/or receive. Don't just sit there and stew and fret and whine and allow yourself to be a "victim"
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Dave asked Gary what his motivation is to keep on keepin' on in the face of what has been a very challenging career for him. His answer:
"Life is to be LIVED"
I have 4 pages of notes from the 2 sessions. The first morsel I am still chewing on is one of the last thoughts I heard and very well may be the "2 secrets" to the success of any great leader:
ALWAYS LOOK FOR GREAT TALENT
Untalented people will blame their lack of performance on your business MODEL - REAL Talent cannot be known until you see it. Don't believe anyone who tells you he/she IS great talent until you see it in action. Talent grows over time in a fertile environment . . . Strong pressure and accountability from a great leader "Flushes no talent people and sharpens talented people".
STAY ENGAGED
As you build it (whatever it is), you MUST keep your finger on the pulse ALWAYS . . . even when you are pretty sure that the people, systems, and tools are working like clockwork. Don't let a smooth running operation allow you to fool yourself into complacency and thereby take your eye off the ball. The weather outside can (and will) always change.
There are countless stories of leaders who wandered from their OWN models and/or allowed distractive "noise" into their operations and quickly found dramatic plunges in performance.
Love what you do - Do what you love . . . "Life is to be LIVED!"
Best,
b
