Maurice Sendak-Children's Illustratior/Writer Honored by Google Doodle
This morning Google published one of their most creative Doodles by honoring American Illistrator and Writer, Maurice Sendak, June 10, 1928- May 8, 2012.
Sendak was born in Poland and suffered greatly when he was young by losing many family members during the Holoucast. He later became well known by writing and illustrating many books during his entire career. He is probably best know for the book "Where the Wild Things Are" which he wrote and illistrated in 1963. Before that he was best known for illustration "Little Bear" series for writer Else Minarik. His first paid commission was to do the window displays for the toy store, F.A. O. Schwarz.
Maurice collaborated with many authors over the next 50 years. He was considered a very talented writer/author of children's books and won many awards for his creations. He also helped create a children's TV series and sat on the board for many children's television series.
In his lifetime, he made many children happy. He was born the same year that Mickey Mouse was, 1928 and his three most important influences were Emily Dickensen, Mozart, and Herman Melvile plus Walt Disney's Fantasia.
He died May 8, 2012 after suffering a stroke. His books will live on for hundreds of years and continue to make chlidren happy.
My Comments: I loved this book as a little girl and read it over and over. The monster was scary but it was a good book and never gave me nightmares. I think this is Googles most creative doodle and I am so glad they reminded me of the good books I read as a child.
