Outside Comments on AR. Right, Wrong or Indifferent?

You take the time to write a pretty good blog and what? It get's featured? Outstanding!

It usually brings in a lot of comments, mostly from people that only comment on Featured blogs, right?

I've noticed recently that there are some Active Rain peeps that respond to comments on blogs that aren't theirs.

Is this good? Bad? Who cares?

If there's a comment on my blog, I don't think that someone from the outside should respond to them specifically. They should just go write a blog about it themselves.

I guess if someone has a question and they answer it, it's okay? Maybe?

Isn't the comments on MY blog my responsibility to respond to?

Maybe I'm thinking too much about this, but it's what I feel.

I'll respond to the comments on the blog that I wrote. You don't need to.

Thanks.

Eric, I know some hijack extensively.  I can't say I've never responded to a comment on someone else's post, but in general there's a question being asked and I've got the answer so I'll provide.  And if someone is being a world class jerk in a comment, I might just call 'em out for that too.  But otherwise, I'll tend to keep my comments related to the post itself, and not the other comments.

I think a discussion is good - but when one person takes over the entire comment section, I have to draw the line. I know there are a few folks who make a habit of doing that here.

I sometimes say something funny that someone else has responded to. Or I mention that I agree with so and so. However, I have seen those that write a book commenting on someone else's post. I don't care if anyone does that to me or not.

For me it's all about intent. If the comment seems intended to be helpful, informative, or perhaps a counterpoint, then I think it's fine. Poachers, hijackers, and snipers I can do without.

BLiz, exactly the way it sould be.

Emmy, we agree.

Sussie, it's the comments that make it look like it's THEIR blog post that bother me.

Dan, exactly, pal.

I've participated in plenty of hijacks in the day.  But they were in good fun and members only posts intended for the community.  I but my best manners on for public posts and only answer the occasional question if I wonder if I don't if it will ever get answered.

I can only think of one or two times that I've commented on a comment in someones post in AR.  I have participated in a hijack or two for fun.

Suggested.  I see a certain person carrying on entire conversations with other commenters.  I just roll my eyes and move on.  It's kind of annoying, but I guess there are worse things out there.

Eric, If there is that much to say about the subject and the comments, write your own blog is my theory.

Eric, I agree to some extent that if it's your post then comments should be directed to you, however, occasionally a mix of comments between members is not such a bad thing.  I think it can broaden the dialogue, but you as the author need to stay involved and provided some direction with your own comments.

As for those who feel it's their right to hijack a blog then kid gloves be damned.  As you say, "They should just go write a blog about it themselves".

Nick, I think you're right. The talking back and forth is one thing, someone flat out answering people who're commenting on your blog is another.
