What’s it Like to Live in the Walking District in Cardiff?
The Walking District neighborhood is pretty much laid out in a grid, with a number of streets running horizontal along the hill, and several main streets running east and west up the hill. One cannot help but think of the streets in San Francisco that you find in this part of Cardiff.
The topography allows for many homes, even single story properties, to have awesome views of the ocean, whitewater, San Eljio Lagoon, the neighborhood, and the panoramic coast depending on location.
Walking District homes tend to be fairly crowded together, with smallish yards (many lots in this area are roughly 50’ x100’), and you will find a diverse mix of newly built or remodeled homes with multiple levels, and small cottages that have been there for years without renovation. The streets are somewhat narrow and there are a fair number of cars parking on them, especially in the summer.
Cardiff has building restrictions that prevent homes above a certain height, which helps to preserve some of the views and it’s important to verify this before you make plans to build or remodel. There are both attached and detached homes, as well as condos and twinhomes. It’s common to find many homes built with a reverse or upside-down floor plan (living areas on top, bedrooms below, or some other variation) to take advantage of the views from the main living levels.
What’s Going on Near the Walking District in Cardiff?
Cardiff may not be known as a restaurant mecca, but there are some nice eateries close by, including Pipes Cafe, a well known breakfast place, and Trattoria Positano that offers dining al fresco with ocean views. Restaurant Row (The Beach House, The Chart House, Las Olas, Pacific Grill, to name a few), has several restaurants directly on the beach just to the south along the Coast Road (turn left at the Cardiff Kook statue and it’s less than ¼ mile). VG Donuts is not to be missed.
Seaside Market is an amazing shopping destination downtown. You will be awed by the amount of stuff crammed into this grocery and the quality of produce, fish, meats and other products is impressive. Plus there is a great patio in front to enjoy food, people watching and the views.
There is excellent surfing nearby at Cardiff State Beach or Swami's. And you'll find many more shopping and dining opportunities in downtown Encinitas (north) and Solana Beach (south), especially the Cedros Design District (in Solana Beach).
What Schools will the Children in the Walking District Attend?
Children in the Walking District will attend the Cardiff School District with the Cardiff School on Montgomery and the Ada Harris School on Windsor. Beyond grade 6 students go to the Encinitas schools.
