You have if you're here in Palm Springs! Ha! Hard to imagine if you've never experienced true HEAT. I am a "local." From my perspective, triple digits are the summer norm..nothing to concern myself about. My "norm" is..anything up to 115 degrees. Sounds nuts, but when you live here in extreme heat, your blood thins (my explanation of course), and you just adapt to the heat.
Yesterday was the 2nd hottest day of my life here in the City of La Quinta. It was 122. That is HOT! Here's what it feels like..
1. Your breath going in and out..actually burns.
2. Moving is hard..you just have to slow down; in EVERYTHING!
3. KNOW that when you get into your car, you cannot touch the steering wheel. When you roll down the window, the gusts of created air (by driving), are NOT cooling. The air is stultifying.
4. Do not attempt to touch the pavement. Do not leave ANYTHING, alive or not, in your car ..for it will die.
The flip side? Here's what I LOVE about living here in the Palm Springs Valley..even in the summer.
1. It's warm the instant you step outside. At 3 a.m., at 5 a.m., at midnight..doesn't matter.
2. I can wear shorts and a tank top before sun up and after sundown.
3. For early morning people like myself, I do my physical things, such as riding and exercising, before most people get up!
4. SLOW DOWN! The heat helps me understand the meaning of "siesta."
5. Appreciate my body AND it's limitations.
6. Swimming at ANY time of day/night is awesome!
It sounds nuts, but the extreme heat as talked about here in the Desert Sun article, is truly difficult, but it brings it's gifts too..if I just remember to notice!
