About Grandma Labels and Floating Troubles Away

By
Real Estate Agent

Even though I’m not much of a Kardashian fan or follower, I had to smile this morning. What caught my eye, was Kris Jenner reporting she had conjured a name she’d rather her new grandkid, North, would use instead of “Grandma.” The name selected, “Momager.”

I know a little something about coming of age as a grandmother, and maybe even fretting slightly at the “Grandma” title. I’ve been through it a few times myself. But, with little prompting my grandkids had the grace to bestow the title, “Nana.” However, during a couple years in the early 1990s, I was sometimes seen wearing a pair of camouflage pants around the house and was called, “Grambo.”

In recent years, I can often be found discovering Nirvana in one swimming pool or another. My family has a couple of them locally, and I also belong to a health club. Over the 4th of July holiday, our family celebrated in the traditional style - BBQ, Fireworks, Good Company, and Swimming. As is my habit, I sometimes nap on my back while floating about in the pool.

When one of my grandkids commented that I reminded her of a Manatee, because I just float around all happy and stuff. I quickly corrected, "No, I am The Nanatee."

Anyway, Good Luck to Kris Jenner and her new moniker. . .BUT, who in the world, with the last name of “West” would give the first name of “North” to a poor kid anyway?

Martha - I am convinced there is a place within all of us, where Nirvana is, or knows where to go.  For some, when the going gets tough they go shopping. . .I head for the pool:-)  And, ALL families are crazy.  It's just that the Kardashians have kicked it up a notch, and learned to exploit it.

Andrea - I went through a little of that nervousness too.  I like the way you just let the name thing happen.  At the end of the day it seems a natural name for you!

The Nanatee could be the name of your own show! ;)

Myrl- I do love this post.  I'm called "GiGi" by our grandkids.  Works for me.  They have 3 sets of grandparents to try to remember and name so I'm glad that I got that moniker.  As for who would name their child "North" with the last name of "West"..... someone who needed their ego fed.

Laura - I suppose it could, when you stop to think about it. . .tsk, tsk!

Kwee - The Nanatee was very relaxed that day!  I had started the baked beans in a big crockpot and made a large tossed green salad.  The BBQing was left to others, so all I needed do on the 4th of July was float.  And float I did for about 4 hours total.

Kathy - You got a great moniker!  I've heard some really funny ones over the years.

When I was very little, my father's mother had us call her Grandma'am.  I guess that's how you'd spell it because that's how it sounded.

Chris - The beauty about having unique names for grandparents (and others too), is that we get to spell 'em any way we like:-)

Hi Myrl, Feeling like I sort of know you already I laughed so hard at the manatee comment. I loved this post and it just proves what a really cool Nana you are. What is also so cool is that I could hear you laughing while you were writing parts of this,

William - Well, you're right once again!  There were parts of this story that I laughed during writing.  What had quickly flashed to mind when my granddaughter labeled me a "Manatee," was that manatees are also known as Sea Cows.  God knows I could shed a pound or two, but I didn't want the manatee/sea cow thing to stick in anyone's head too long.  Thus, quickly that "M" in Manatee, became an "N" in Nanatee.  It was all for practical reasons. . .LOL

Myrl,

I am in agreement with William, it  does show what a cooll grandma you are.  Naming one's kid North, could they have been fans of Hitchcok's movie North by Northwest, or maybe I am really reaching.  I was taught to refer to my Russian grandparants as Mamousia, and Papusia, and on the French side was the regular Grande-Mere...LOL A

Alexandra - Knowing you, the names for your grandparents simply rolled off your tongue too!  I'm wondering if you learned much Russian and French from your grandparents?  I've always been a little envious of those, who learned more than one language in childhood because of their roots.  My family has been in this country since 1639.  I'm French, Dutch, Irish, Scotch, German and English.  I'm so diluted, I don't really know what the heck I am. . .LOL

Hi Myrl,

I am surprised because she is obsessed with looking younger but will be interested to see if her show ever gets off the ground. Like your pool pictures and it looks relaxing. I just swim a few laps and put the dogs on the boggie board for a while. It is fun too.

Myrl-Love the pool pic as you looked super relaxed. I don't have any children so I haven't had to think about what my grandkids call me but I like the name they chose for you. I think it fits. Very cool

Kristine - I usually swim laps too.  But I also spend a lot of time just doing my own thing when in the water.  I've yet to see a dog that didn't seem to enjoy water, it seems a natural matrix for them.

Sharon - The 4th of July was a very delightful day!  I can handle many more days like that!

Myrl, The pool sounds like a great break from the heat.  I really am not in to the Kardashians or any other of the "reality" shows.  I really don't like the examples that they teach the young people who are in to that sort of TV programming.

I have always liked the name Grandmother. I guess it is too formal for some.

Many of us wish for a cool pool on the hot days of summer.

Have a great day and an outstanding weekend.

Myrl you really know how to have fun.  I can't imagine taking a nap while floating I suppose it takes practice.

Have a great weekend.
