Mystery Image

Meeting great people is the most fun part of the job, but hiking around beautiful property has to rank as a close second. Northern California's wine country has a wide range of plants to fascinate hikers. This image was captured a few days ago, so it's a mid-July stage for this common-here plant. Post your guesses in the comments section. First correct answer gets...the first correct answer.

I'm thinking it is palm fronds of some sort.

Could it be an artichoke plant?  It really doesn't look much like a plant, but then that's why you shot it so close so we would have to put our thinking caps on.  lol

Madrone treeGary and Nancy and Jean. Thanks for playing. The photo is of the purplish bark peeling from a Madrone tree. Madrones and manzanitas both provide reddish color to California forests. The madrone has much bigger leaves and is a real tree while the manzanita is more of a bush (although capable of being tree sized). This is a picture of the madrone that is featured in this post.

How strange.  I would have guessed something mad made, not natural.
