Can a Coach Be a Good Coach without Being Great at the Business?
ActiveRain staff wrote a post to ask you to add your reviews for Coaches:
The Best Become the Best Because They Use a Coach
I read through the comments and my reply comment to one of the comments was getting too long so here is the story behind good coaching.
There are three kinds of coaches, consultants, trainers. We will use the word "coach" to apply to all three in this post.
- The coach who leaves the real estate business because they could not make money in the real estate business so they decided it would be easier to make money being a coach.
- The coach who is good in real estate but not great. This person discovers that they can teach very well and they have good listening skills. This also may be the person who for health reasons or other personal reasons can not longer drive to view homes with buyers or meet sellers.
- The coach who is great at real estate, a top producer in fact. This coach made it to the top of their business and at that point in life- it is time to pay it forward. This is their return. This is the coach that discovers a passion for changing lives, helping others and that passion is like a hunger within that can not be filled until they pass on the torch of success to others.
Now the coach I would want to hire is going to be the one that is living in passion. I will let you guess which one I fit into:)
The question came up in the comments: can you really teach something that you are not good at yourself?
Here is a very personal story to illustrate that you can.
In my previous marriage we had 5 little kids. I was a full time mom, homeschool mom, real estate agent and co-owner of Tae Kwon Do schools. I was in charge of sales, conversions and marketing for our Tae Kwon Do schools. I was one of the top sales people in the entire organization nationwide. My x husband was abusive and mean. He never wanted me to shine. He hated that the students liked me better than him. He hated that our rank superiors in the organization liked me more than him and also that they would feature me as a great business owner, sales person, etc. I won all kinds of awards.
I am a second degree black belt certified instructor but I did not enter tournaments and I was not very coordinated and did not have great self confidence. I could not kick as high as my students. One day in front of all the students - about 25 people in the class- I was helping a student do a side kick. Right in front of all those people, my x yells across the room about me, " You look like a dog pissing on a fire hydrant!"
You know what I learned from through these years? That I was a phenomenal teacher because I had passion, I had a gift for changing lives. I had a gift for helping kids and adults believe in themselves and could help them become disciplined, gain self confidence and make a HUGE difference in their lives.
It did not matter that I could not kick high, I had heart, empathy and the connection with the students.
I will never ever put down a coach who maybe did not get a lot of listings when they were in the business but they can teach someone else to get the most listings in their office. I will never put down a coach who decided to coach because they discovered a gift for teaching, inspiring and changing lives.
If I have made a difference in your business or your life, I would love it if you would leave a review for me in the activerain review section for coaches:) You can leave a review for me by clicking here.
