Can a Coach Be a Good Coach without Being Great at the Business?

ActiveRain staff wrote a post to ask you to add your reviews for Coaches:

The Best Become the Best Because They Use a Coach

I read through the comments and my reply comment to one of the comments was getting too long so here is the story behind good coaching. Katerina Gasset Coaching Consulting Private Coaching Listing Experts Academy

There are three kinds of coaches, consultants, trainers. We will use the word "coach" to apply to all three in this post.

  • The coach who leaves the real estate business because they could not make money in the real estate business so they decided it would be easier to make money being a coach.
  • The coach who is good in real estate but not great. This person discovers that they can teach very well and they have good listening skills. This also may be the person who for health reasons or other personal reasons can not longer drive to view homes with buyers or meet sellers.
  • The coach who is great at real estate, a top producer in fact. This coach made it to the top of their business and at that point in life- it is time to pay it forward. This is their return. This is the coach that discovers a passion for changing lives, helping others and that passion is like a hunger within that can not be filled until they pass on the torch of success to others.

Now the coach I would want to hire is going to be the one that is living in passion. I will let you guess which one I fit into:)

The question came up in the comments: can you really teach something that you are not good at yourself?

Here is a very personal story to illustrate that you can.

In my previous marriage we had 5 little kids. I was a full time mom, homeschool mom, real estate agent and co-owner of Tae Kwon Do schools. I was in charge of sales, conversions and marketing for our Tae Kwon Do schools. I was one of the top sales people in the entire organization nationwide. My x husband was abusive and mean. He never wanted me to shine. He hated that the students liked me better than him. He hated that our rank superiors in the organization liked me more than him and also that they would feature me as a great business owner, sales person, etc. I won all kinds of awards.

I am a second degree black belt certified instructor but I did not enter tournaments and I was not very coordinated and did not have great self confidence. I could not kick as high as my students. One day in front of all the students - about 25 people in the class- I was helping a student do a side kick. Right in front of all those people, my x yells across the room about me, " You look like a dog pissing on a fire hydrant!"

You know what I learned from through these years? That I was a phenomenal teacher because I had passion, I had a gift for changing lives. I had a gift for helping kids and adults believe in themselves and could help them become disciplined, gain self confidence and make a HUGE difference in their lives.

It did not matter that I could not kick high, I had heart, empathy and the connection with the students.

I will never ever put down a coach who maybe did not get a lot of listings when they were in the business but they can teach someone else to get the most listings in their office. I will never put down a coach who decided to coach because they discovered a gift for teaching, inspiring and changing lives.

If I have made a difference in your business or your life, I would love it if you would leave a review for me in the activerain review section for coaches:) You can leave a review for me by clicking here.

Dan- I agree with you. It all depends on what any person is hiring a coach or consultant for. Depending on that is determines what level of direct experience the coach needs to have. I like the ones who walk their talk but I will also hire one in a heartbeat who is now retired if they have the necessary skills needed.

I personally would not hire a coach who left any business because they could not make it in a business.

Doug- I agree, the athlete field is a great example of who can coach and who can not:) We see it all the time even at the Little League levels:) Our ten year old who knows more about baseball than the majority of adults- his favorite coach is a coach who played as a pitcher for the Marlins but his second favorite is a dad who has never played ball.

Bill- I agree, there are times where you just need another set of eyes.

Jerry- I am sure you were a great football coach!

Kimo- thank you for sharing that great insight. There are many different kinds of coaches and I guess I should say, Consultants. To be able to motivate you - you don't need to be in the business. But to teach you SEO- you need someone who does SEO on a consistant basis and is getting results for other clients.

Julie- You are braver than I was:). I was too self conscious because of the abuse. It was very bad. It took me a long time to heal and rise above the ashes. Feel free to contact me on my cell phone to discuss any of your questions: 561-502-1577- text me your name and number.

Michelle- Thanks. I like to share what I have learned through stories because it helps others to see what is possible.

coaches may be able to see their own weaknesses in others and guide them accordingly...many coaches in many aspectss of business were not adept at their field. Many outstanding baseball coaches were not good players

Kathy- It is all about your passion. Whenever I speak to an audience it is through my passion on what I am speaking and the passion of getting a message across that connects me to them. They get a lot of great information but it is through the passion that it resonates and motivates them into action.

Larry- Thank you. I like to share stories, facts tell but stories sell:)

Paddy- Something very interesting that I discovered about many therapists and psychologists- they started in those areas because they were ADD or BiPolar,  depressed, etc - they started out to help themselves and through that journey were able to connect with others who are going through the same thing. They can see it easier in others because they went through it themselves. The best drug rehab counselors I know are full of passion because they are recovering addicts and that connection helps many.

Kristin- :)

John- Yes, it does. Everyone should live in Passion. It makes work, not work. It makes life enjoyable and you can make a difference in the world.

Pam- I would not hire a coach who got out of the business because they did not make it. That is not the coach for me. I need someone who walks their talk. However, someone who rose to the top or was successful according to their own goals and then leaves the business in order to fully coach and consult, that is the person I want. Or someone who is still working in the business and also coaching. That is what I do. But now, I only do the marketing and SEO for our brokerage and recruiting and training our agents. That is where my passion lies so that is the path I walk.

Bob Miller- Thank you for reading the insight from personal stories:)

Sharon- I think you are correct in that assertation. But the student also has to be ready- you know the saying- when the student is ready, the teacher appears.

Dan- Toastmaster is a great program! I never did it but know many people who have. Speaking to large audiences comes naturally to me.

Gary- I agree with you. Paying it forward through teaching, coaching, consulting- is a great way to make a difference in the world. I always felt it my duty to share what I learn and know.

Gita- Thank you. I hope you have a wonderful week.

Missy- Neither would I:) I want someone to understand very well the field I want to learn more about. I do however, believe that if someone discovers their passion lies in teaching and consulting, that leaving their business that they understood and were good at, is the right thing to do. You must follow your heart and your calling.

Lyn- Thank you for the compliment. I did not see many either.

Amanda and Jared- Neither would I:)

Jimmy- Thanks for sharing that about Ted Williams. My favorite team is SF Giants and our (baseball pitcher) son's favorite team is NY Yankees. I keep telling him that my dream is to move back to San Francisco and I get to do that when he gets drafted to the Giants:) I love the movie, MoneyBall.

David- Thanks! It was not easy for me to earn. But I was a certified instructor which meant a lot more to me. I have always been in the business of changing lives. That life was great in that I touched so many kids and adults who had low self esteem and no confidence. I helped kids get off of ADHD drugs and helped adults start life with renewed sense of worth. Taekwondo is great for everyone. Healthy and natural too:)

Bill- Absolutely! I do coach some brokers who still don't follow through, very frustrating!

Mike McCann- There are some awesome real estate producers who are terrible at coaching but still coach:) I am not the top realtor in my area but I do know my coaching clients get results:)

Laura- Who is your favorite Feng Shui instructor?

Praful- Thank you! That was a wonderful comment and compliment. I like your comment about kingmakers and kings too.

Frank- It is results that count!

Lana- Thank you. My goal is to have my passion shine through my words and good positive energy flow from my fingertips and through my voice and from my heart.

Christine- Yes, that is important to me, been there done that, kind of coaches. Although I have not found a lot of good ones in any field. I hate to say it, but so many of them are so superficial. Not my cup of tea.

Scott- You are welcome. Transparency is my motto:)

Andrew- I get what you are saying. There also needs to be some balance though because unless you show people what you have done and have credibility - they are not going to believe you can help them. There are some major Jack Horners in the field- you do very well precisely by tooting their own horns. Humble does not get them in the limelight and they sell to the masses so to them that matters.

I think that sharing the success of your coaching clients is the best way to show what you know. I am being mentored by an internet successful business owner who was featured in Forbes and has made over 20 Million$ by coaching other entreprenuers online. I like him because he is approachable, I do my homework because he has people who he has coached who are successful and their stories resonated with me. I have success using his coaching because I trusted and believed him. Yes, he has to let me know that he is very successful otherwise I would not buy his coaching.

Hella- Yes, I am glad I did too. It took us 20 years to do so. It was hard. Being in a violent and abusive relationship is really hard - people think it is so easy to just walk away but they don't understand the dynamics of such relationships.

Katerina - well said and I know it comes from your heart.  You are very passionate and I'm sure anyone who seeks your coaching services will not be disappointed if he/she is the right fit.

I have been following you like a stalker (LOL) from the time I started in 2008, once you started your coaching session with SEO to the top, etc. I signed up and took the course.  I was longing for something one-on-one and for me you were the perfect fit.  Almost two years later, you still pick me up when needed and guide me to be successful.

You are second to none :)
