Balance - A False Pretense in a Perfect Seeking world

My friend Thom Abbott, shared an artistic design of the Ying and Yang - a symbol of balance in so many ways. As for me, when I think about the word Balance, I imagine a gymnast in her contortionist position - in perfect balance. Yea.... the position that many people want to seek, many try to sell the concept.

When I became a new mom back in late 2007 and starting a new real estate brokerage company, I constantly feel the society, and other stay at home moms judging me for the decisions I made. In so many ways, it made me feel that I loved my child less because I chose to work. It made me feel I loved money more than my family. It was a few hard years. In addition to taking care of an extremely strong-willed child, this was not good for my psyche at all.

Fast forward many years later, here's my take on BALANCE.

I wont say, "There's no such thing as BALANCE". In order to achieve your goals and dreams, no one can stay in balance while trying to achieve.

I no longer walked the earth with my guilt trip on my back.

BALANCE - in so many ways is REAL. It is a perfect state of mind. But the truth is that no one can live in the perfect state of BALANCE all the time.

BALANCE in BUSINESS and PERSONAL LIFE may mean there is a certain time of the year (like in real estate) that we are very, very busy selling real estate. It may start in March, and peaking in June/ July. Then, you feel the pressure relief valve open by mid-August when everyone who wanted to make a housing decision before school starts have already done so. It may mean missing a few dinners each week and a few bedtime stories in the busy months.

When it's less busy, it could also mean lunches at school. It could mean having a good long quiet vacation of "Just US".

I wont let the guilt of a world trying to seek perfection and balance tear me down. Life is hard in itself.

While trying to grow a business, you may miss more fun stuff that the family does. Keep the eye on the goal. No one could seek success without having to work for it. It may mean a short period of a few months out of year, you are gone alot (imbalance state). Then, in a period of a few years, you are busy for a few months. But as a hold, you go through hills and valleys while climbing the overall big mountain.

So, if you feel like a chicken running with your head chopped off, don't feel guilty. Accept the fact that it takes many IMBALANCE to get to the overall BALANCE state.

Loreena~ I've been having similar thoughts recently. I'm at a place where I need to start building better habits in my business life so that I can have better balance. I need to keep the pipeline full so that I'm not riding the roller coaster that a real estate business can be, if you let it! Thanks for sharing with us!

I agree, there is just no way to live in perfect balance.  Honestly, something is going to "suffer" when you pay more attention to it...for example, you pay more attention to business, then family and personal time will lack and vice versa.  It's just the way it is and the only people that need to understand are your family and they love you so no guilt :)!

Loreena, it is all about balance in our business and personal life as allowing plenty of time for our spiritual life.  Suggested, because this is what we all want is balance.

Hi Loreena. I doubt there is a perfect balance though we can always strive for equilibrium. It's different too when you are the owner of your brokerage and have a family. Significantly different.

Accept the imperfections of a life lived and enjoy the journey. Oh and let go of the guilt. It has no positive purpose in ones life.

Hi Loreena...Each of us should do what we feel is right for our families and ourselves. Although it is impossible to achieve and maintain a perfect balance at all times we can seek to achieve a healthy balance as often as possible. It is knowing the things we need and the things we want and recognizing the difference.

Loreena, what I found interesting is that you thought women criticized you for working, while I felt women criticized me for not. At least, not in the traditional sense of working. I operated a home daycare for nine years so I could afford to stay home with my kids.
