Build Crofton High School in Crofton, Maryland

Last night I attended a school board meeting along with about 150 other concerned citizens of our town, Crofton, Maryland, to request that funds for building a 13th high school in our community be allotted in the 2015 capital budget. Organizers did a fabulous job rallying the troops with specially-made t-shirts and signs so that when the spokespeople pled our case, a sea of purple "Crofton High School" tshirts stood behind them.

Our community is growing in leaps and bounds. Currently, the 1400 high schoolers in Crofton are split into two regional high schools that are either over-capacity or are about to be. With the Board of Education already owning the land where the high school will be built, the community hopes to get our effort on the list of the many school-related improvements and projects on the budget. New developments are bringing more families and even more high schoolers that will not be accomodated at the current schools.

Many thanks to Barbara Aldridge and Jonathan Boniface who addressed the board eloquently with compelling testimony.

No word yet on the outcome, but we will continue to work toward building a high school in our community!

Thanl you so much for posting this, Jenn, and more importantly... for going to the meeting and getting involved!  You can see that my generation of Crofton parents failed to achieve a Crofton H.S., but I strongly believe in the need and I am confident that you and your peers can get it done.

Good luck on getting the new school. Waldorf is in the process of building it's fourth high school which will make a total of 7 in Charles County.

Margaret - You're quite welcome. I think it is much easier for current residents as we now have the communication opportunities of facebook and other social media. The previous generation had to work that much harder - and without all the groundwork, we'd be starting from scratch. Hopefully the momentum keeps building.

Gerard - Thank you! We'll take all the luck we can get. Was it difficult to get the new school?
