Home - Quinn was always the favorite

A House Built with Love ~ My Home

We built our home back in 1989. I knew nothing about building back then or real estate for that matter. I went forward with passion and determination, just like everyone else at that time, trying to design and choose all the details that are the fun part of building. I did not have the internet nor the advice of a real estate agent. We worked with an architect and a builder. Together we built a house that became our home.

Quinn the favorite

While our home is probably too big and too contemporary for my taste these days, my home has a special place in my heart. It is where my family and I grew up together sharing our joys and sorrows. A house becomes a home the day you are given keys and lay down on the bed for the first time. It becomes a part of your life and a place to come home to at the end of the day.

I raised two daughters with my husband enjoying our house, our home for the last 20+ years.

As if that wasn't enough, we opened our hearts and our home to a little pup named Quinn when my girls were still young and living at home. As my girls moved out, my little toddler pup with the furry white tail stayed behind to keep our lives glued together with a sense of home that only a Westie can bring. He kept the empty nest from feeling quite so empty. My girls could tell you many stories all about Quinn, and how the house was really his. An adorable friend and family member, he was the favorite. He never had to make his bed, or take out the trash, or wash the dishes or anything but look cute. That made him the favorite with special consideration on  any and all occasions. He was rewarded for doing absolutely nothing with cookies every day. That made him the favorite.

Quinn is gone and our girls live a bit too far away these days. We continue to make new memories, just the two of us. When it comes time for us to sell we will find another house to enjoy. A place to call home. I expect that when we do there will be a new puppy that will make the transition with us. One that will steal our hearts and he/she too will be the favorite, turning that house into my new home.

Good morning Janis. Your story was very moving and I recognize how much your Quinn meant to you. I hope the new special pup isn't too far away.

Hi Janis, I try not to think about my girls leaving the nest some day! But I do imagine that home will feel very different. On one hand you've made all these memories and shared decades in it together, on the other hand it's just not the same.

Your home building experience is very similar to the way my parents built, no spec home or half-finished subdivision. Just a lot, an architect and a construction crew. Sounds much more exciting to me :-)

Thanks Sheila.. i look forward to a new pup and a new home

Andrea - if only i knew then what I know now. The house would have been much smaller. It is a beautiful home and it was fun building it.

As far as the girls moving out.. well yes I do miss them, but now I get to do more things for me. I too have grown up since then and learned a great deal about me. A new beginning!

Hi Janis ~

What a beautifully written blog post!  Sounds like you have so many wonderful memories of your current home, raising your daughters, and your special pup, Quinn.  As you say, when it comes time to move, you will find an adorable pup and begin the process of creating memories and making your new house your new home.

Hi Janis, that was a wonderful story and as someone who has loved, and lost, many canine companions I can certainly relate to your story.  What wonderful memories you have of your home and your family.

First of all, Quinn is a doll. Bet you still miss him. You are a lucky lady to have shared all those wonderful years in a home you love, with people you love. Memories are fun to share and relive - and I appreciate that you know there is a new home - and a new pup in your future.  I like living in the moment, with a hint of what's ahead.

Janice,

What a sweet story!  We have a little Shih Tzu that it for our family like Quinn was for yours.  We originally got him because our daughter begged for a puppy.  Now he is holding down the fort!

As I said in my story, home is where my dog is!

Have a wonderful week,

DeeDee
