I Remain Conflicted About Dressing Up Our Pets For Halloween

I know they are adorable just like all the little kids.  I just can't help but wonder if our pets had a say in the matter, would they be willing participants?

Dog dressed as Pirate for Halloween

I watched my son dress his dog, Molly.  She had no issue wearing the pants and the top to her Pirate costume .... but when the head band that creates the hat went on, Molly immediately tried to remove it with her paw.  Clearly she did not like it.

However, she is such a good and obedient dog, when my son said, "Molly, leave it alone" she stopped trying to paw it off of her head.  She was also rewarded with some treats which distracted her to the point of seemingly forgetting about that "thing on her head."

Dog dressed in a Pirate costume

I've seen some posts here in the rain with pets dressed in completely adorable costumes.  I've even seen a post with horses dressed in costumes.

My veterinarian has a "best Halloween consume contest" every year.

I get it, Halloween is a time for costumes.  I just can't help but wonder if our pets had a say in the matter, would they be willing participants?

There is no judgment here on anyone who dresses their pets for Halloween or any other time.  Heck, my son dressed his beloved pet in a costume.  To each their own. I am not judging my son for doing it. Clearly the pets are not being harmed in any way. I just don't feel it is something I would do.

How do you feel about dressing our pets for Halloween?  Would you want your pet to wear something they clearly are annoyed by wearing?

Wishing Everyone (and their pets) a Happy, Safe and Fun Halloween.

May every moment of the day be filled with laughter and joy.

Hi Kathleen - It's definitely cute, but our pack is, on issues like this at least, a democracy, and the human vote is solidly outnumbered by the canine one. We have one dog that will tolerate a tee shirt, but other than that, they hate it. They do like Halloween, though, with all the strange people coming to see them, and extra treats.

Hi Kathleen, mine can also tolerate a t-shirt every now and then but that's as far as he will go and that's only because we tell him to "leave it alone". He's comfortable the way he looks and no matter how many treats we bribe him with, he won't agree to wear a costume.
I must say Molly looks adorable, I'm sure she'll be getting tons of attention.

Gene, Molly is truly pampered and I hope she won't need therapy after wearing her Pirate's costume.

Debbie, Thank you for not forcing your pet to wear something they don't like!

Patty, Thanks for stopping by.

Dick, Most dogs like all the attention they can get and of course, there are never too many treats!  I'm comforted to know that the canine vote rules!

Beth, It's not "natural" for pets to wear clothes. I imagine it is very uncomfortable for most of them. I am sure some will sport the gear and have no issues with it. They certainly let us know when they don't like it! Bill and Liz Spear's dog looked like she was posing ... not having any issues with her Sheriff costume at all.

I've had dogs my whole life and love them to pieces... but.... I never even thought of dressing them up for Halloween... I guess it's fine if the dogs like it... if not I wouldn't bother dressing them up...

Richard & Beth,  I can imagine how much you love your dogs. I agree, if the like it or pose no objection to being dressed up ... then its fine.  If they don't like it then we need to honor them for who and what they are ... dogs!

I always feel sorry for the pets that have to put up with the hats and other items. Winter items to keep them warm is different.

my furry kids have CLEARLY expressed their NO to costumes.  They don't even like them on the kids that come to our door on Halloween so we hand out candy from the porch with our fur babies safely out of sight of costumes.

I guess I'm guilty LOL. I put my dogs in matching T shirts with pumpkin faces on them LOL. They were a big hit with the kids when I was passing out candy. It was just like they were wearing their coats for cold weather. They didn't mind at all. I didn't put anything on their heads because that's just too weird for them. LOL. If I could figure out how to put a photo in my comment I would show you.

Well Kathleen, you saw the picture of our little "sheriff" from yesterday, and we'll say Bunny loves her clothes!  First thing in the morning she's ready to put on her collar and pokes her head right through.  She loves the dress up before the retirement center visits because she knows she's going to pay them a visit and she loves people.  So in her case, it's totally cool.  Now some of our cats and past dogs would be MOST displeased with the concept!! :)

I think dogs probably don't mind it too much because their sole purpose in life is to make their humans  happy. If mommy and daddy are pleased with them, they're OK. Cats, on the other hand, carry no such sentiment. And I'm too smart to try it with them. I like my face in one piece, thank you, very much.

Barbara-Jo,  I do too. If they need something to keep them warm and dry and they do not have issues with the clothes ... then I say .. go for it.

Tammy, Our pets have personalities just like we do.  I get that some won't mind at all and others do. When I saw Molly trying to pull the head piece off ... I knew she did not like it.

Janice,  If your pets are ok with the clothes then it's all good in my book.  Some pets don't have issues with the clothes.  I just feel pets should not be forced to wear clothes/costumes.

Bill, I know. Bunny was sporting her costume. I also feel that she knows she is playing a role and helping others.  She is one very special and lucky dog. What a blessing she is to so many.

George,  The one piece she was not wearing was the stuffed parrot.  Thankfully, no sword.

Elizabeth, LOL - you are so right about cats and how dogs just want to please.

Kathleen  Our Goldendoodle , Charly looks up at me and she can really, really talk.  When we go jogging she looks at me and asks "Is this as fast as you can go?"  When I ask her if I can do something 'stupid' like a costume she has the unique ability to make me feel very, very small.  Enjoy your day!

I have not dressed up any of my furry kids for Halloween, but I have cats, who are much tougher to get into clothes than dogs.

John, Charly is a smart Goldendoodle.  She knows who she is and she just loves being who she is and spending time with you.  I imagine her love for you would tolerate a costume.

Carol, You are one brave soul to even attempt to dress a cat.
