“Guy Fawkes, Susan B. Anthony and Saddam Hussein have what in common?”
All three share an important anniversary on November 5th.
Curious to learn more about these three public figures, Guy Fawkes, Susan B. Anthony and Saddam Hussein? Read along to find out information on these three people, as well as other interesting facts that happened on November 5th.
1605 – Gunpowder Plot: Guy Fawkes is arrested. Fawkes was one of 13 English Catholic conspirators planning to kill the Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter, Princess Elizabeth. Their plot involved planting numerous kegs of gunpowder under the House of Lords.
After the plot was discovered and conspirators tortured for information, then punished, an Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as a day of thanksgiving for "the joyful day of deliverance
In Great Britain, November 5 is known as Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Plot the latter can be traced directly back to the original celebration of 5 November 1605.
1831 – Nat Turner, American slave leader, is tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in Virginia.
1872 – In defiance of American law, suffragist Susan B. Anthony votes in an election for the first time. On On November 18, 1872, Anthony was arrested by a U.S. Deputy Marshal for voting.
During her trial seven months later, Anthony centered her defense of her action on the recent Fourteenth Amendment which states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
As the Fourteenth Amendment was not in effect at the time of her vote and arrest, Anthony was fined $100.
1895 – George B. Selden is granted the first U.S. patent for an automobile.
1912 – Woodrow Wilson is elected to the presidency of the United States.
2006 – Saddam Hussein, former president of Iraq, (along with co-defendants Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti and Awad Hamed al-Bandar) are sentenced to death for their role in the massacre of 148 Shi'a Muslims in 1982.
2007 – Android mobile operating system is unveiled by Google.
While these interesting facts about Guy Fawkes, Susan B. Anthony and Saddam Hussein on November 5th, have nothing to do with my real estate business selling homes to families in San Jose, Cupertino and Saratoga in Silicon Valley, Calif., they sure do add fun and entertainment to life.
