A WALL OF HONOR—A STAUNCH ROCK OF LIBERTY
Just South of I-40, on Tennessee Hwy 109 there is a sacred up-crop of rock. There are several such up-crops in the area; but this one is special: it is a shrine. It is a memorial to fallen heroes. I did not recognize any of the names, but I am drawn to that rock, and there I pray.
My prayer is one of sorrow—I have sorrow for loved ones left with an emptiness: such loss.
My prayer is one of gratitude—my liberty has been given new breath as they drew their last.
My prayer is one of resolve—I will not take my freedom for granted: I will reverently sing “My Country tis of Thee [God], Sweet land of liberty—Of Thee [God] I sing. “
My prayer is one of thanksgiving—I am so blessed to have birth and life, opportunity and responsibility, friends and family, joy and health—I AM AN AMERICAN—A SON OF LIBERTY.
Today is Veteran’s Day. More than at any other time in my life, I receive and witness thoughtful words of appreciations to my fellow veterans and myself. We appreciate the thoughts. Most of us have returned home to enjoy the freedom we were enlisted to defend. Many of us are proud of our service, but have great awareness that we received more than we gave. Our true desire is for all Americans to think about Our Constitution, Our Flag, and Our Pledge; and we exhort all to be ready to defend them against all enemies—foreign and domestic. Let us not just “talk the talk”—let us “walk the walk.”
“God Bless America—land that I love…my home sweet home.”
Take a few moments. Bend a knee, bow a head and word your prayer: not for us vets, but for Our Sweet Land of Liberty.
I want to thank The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1004 in Lebanon for not forgetting our fallen, and I wish to share the poem “Stone Wall”, composed by Richard A. Kraft.
Respectfully,
Fred Cope
