What Do Real Estate Agents and Car Salesmen Have in Common?

You all know how much of the public views us as not much better than used car salesmen. Well why is that?

Is it the few rotten apples that spoil the barrel?

Does the public not realize how hard we work?

Is it the "easy entry" or low barrier to licensing?

Do they perceive us as over paid?

Or is it because many agents get the job for the same reason car salesmen do - they think it is easy and the public will come to us?

A similar discussion on social media recently blamed it mostly on the low educational and experience barrier to entrance.

But we think it is much broader. Please let us know what you think!

I know a few folks sometimes think we are overpaid until I tell them that if I negotiate on commission, it must be made up somewhere and that would be in the marketing I spend on their home and by spending less on the marketing they may not get all the quality buyers they could have and that could lead to lower offers. Works most times.

I often think that car salesmen have a bad rap. There are those in every business that give others a bad name, so that means it is our responsibility to make our respective industries look good.
