Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #54

Jaywalking...an Orlando family tradition that took a tragic turn this Christmas.  There are some things we shouldn't pass along to our kids- and the habit of jaywalking should be pretty high on the "not to" list....

Another tragedy- yet a very preventable one if folks would only use sidewalks for walking and let cars use the streets.

Deadly Christmas crash: Grandmother and 2 boys in stroller struck by car

A Christmas night tragedy has left a Sunrise family grieving over the death of a grandmother while also hoping that the two young cousins she was pushing on a stroller will recover.

The grandmother, Li Fang Dong, 61, of Sunrise, and the boys were hit at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Sunset Strip at about 7 p.m., police said.

She died from her injuries. The boys, ages 1 and 2, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

Sunrise police officials said it appears the grandmother was not using the crosswalk the night of the crash.

Police spray-paint markings left at the scene on Thursday suggested the impact took place about 20 yards south of the crosswalk. Blood and medical equipment could still be seen at the location on Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the white Scion tC, identified only as a 23-year-old Davie resident, was not hurt and stayed at the crash site, police said.

"No charges are expected at this time for the driver, and the investigation is still ongoing," said agency spokesman Sgt. Rodney Hailey.

Some people think that just because they step out onto the road they have the right away.  Even if you are in the crosswalk, don't expect that close oncoming car to be able to stop on a dime.

I am amazed more and more at how bad the jaywalking is in Florida.  You just do not see it this bad in other parts of the country.  Just last week I saw 8 lanes of traffic on 436 in Apopka screech to a halt as woman with baby in her arms leisurly jaywalked across that crazy busy road.

Hi, William:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Many folks would likely plead ignorance with regard to the laws pertaining to pedestrians, crosswalks, etc- but far too many others are well aware of them and simply ignore them at their peril as with all of the 54 stories I've written about to date.

All else aside, the law of common sense should tell folks that if a car is heading towards them going 50 mph or so, it's best not to walk in front of it at the last minute.  "Should" and reality don't always mix around here, though.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Did she have a cell phone to her ear or headphones on?  That's the craziest thing, too- not only will these goofballs walk out into traffic, but they'll do it with a cell phone to their heads.  Folks in New York think it's bad when folks walk/text and fall into open manholes and things (and I'm sure it's no fun), but New York's dummies can't hold a candle to our dummies!

I've pretty much tipped my king of sorts- all but giving up on the notion that anyone in any type of authority around here really cares about it.  I've written these posts for right at 2 years now, I've spoken about the situation at a MetroPlan Orlando board meeting and talk about it with anyone I can- yet nothing changes.

And I can find cops all day long that would sit and watch guys walk out into traffic and do nothing about it.  Have photos of that happening, too...
