I was over on Trulia.com today looking through some of the questions. One member asked "What do you look for in a lender?"
It got me thinking.
Amanda and I are just finishing up our fifth year selling real estate in the Fort Wayne area, and we have gone through our fair share of lenders.
2009: We started using the lender that was in our office. We absolutely LOVED her, but her processor stunk. After a few tough deals, we moved on.
2010: We started using a super nice guy with a super big bank. He was great, but the big bank was not. Too many hands in the pot, too much red tape, and too many extended closing dates. Not good.
2011: We started using a very nice husband and wife team that owned their own mortgage company. They had done a ton of refis over the years, but were new to the purchase side of mortgages. While we respected and appreciated their work ethic, they didn't know the process. Too many delays and problems from them, so again, we moved on.
Late 2011 through today: We ran into a gentleman by the name of Joel Scheer with Ruoff Home Mortgage. He was the preferred lender of a seller/buyer client of ours.
Here is what he did for us and our client:
1. He communicated almost daily with us through the entire process. I never had to ask him questions because he was on top of everything.
2. He saw the possibility of an issue and stomped it out before it became a problem.
3. He did exactly what he said he was going to do.
4. He closed on time.
5. He reviewed the HUD with our buyers the day before closing to make sure they understood everything.
6. He came to the closing.
Since our first closing together back on December 23, 2011, he has done this exact same thing for MANY of our clients. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but trust me... it is.
What do I look for in a lender? I look for everything that Joel Scheer does for us time and time again.
