Unlike many struggling industries, the security industry is booming. Society's increased mobility makes physical security a higher concern than ever before. Losing or misplacing keys and worries about the number of keys that may exist for any given lock have popularized keyless entry systems. While this type of lock has been around since the 1980s, its use has been confined mainly to businesses. Thanks to recent advances in digital technology and lowered costs, however, these alternatives to keyed door locks are now widely available for residential use.
The common keyless systems in use include a Push Button Handle set, Hardwired Keypads and Wireless Remote Deadbolts. Most of these systems allow the homeowner to program unique codes for different users and/or different time periods for different codes. Many models will also signal an alarm or shut down temporarily after several incorrect codes have been entered; still others can be linked to a computer or whole house security system.
Although generally more expensive than a regular keyed door lock, a keyless entry system may be the right choice for you for the added peace of mind it can provide.
