Why A Snapshot Is So Wonderful

Photography SnapshotI got to thinking the other day with the prevalence of so many phone cameras in the hands of everyone and easily taking all sorts of photos

Why A Snapshot Is So Wonderful

  • freezing time, what you hold in that image is unchangeable, the people, the lighting, the landscape, the "event"
  • sharing, printing, sending on the Internet, posting to the web, it is easily an experience others can feel instantaneously like seeing a painting in a museum
  • memories, you get to hold on to that TIME to review deeper into the future when the world will have changed much from that point
  • taking multiple ones of the same thing, like capturing a little child's first eating a cupcake, you see how imperfection is good, cause they grow so fast, and today memory or printing is cheap so shoot away
  • reminding yourself there is much beauty in life, you are documenting it, sharing laughter and joy

Photography can bite us all as a bug with small pocket cameras with high megapixels or cameras inside phones which keep getting better and better. Keep your eyes open for that MOMENT, something you want to preserve, and feel free to take lots that you would toss too. A numbers game surely is photography, taking many to get that ONE. But that ONE, looking back, sure can be worth it.

Gary - Excellent post, as always.  In the old film days, if I went on a two week vacation somewhere scenic, I would shoot an average of 30-40 rolls of 36 count film. As you have gathered, I am sentimental and don't want to miss a memory.  40 rolls of film would get narrowed down to about 300 of the best photos. What a waste of all that processing paper. It is so nice having digital now, and the ability to fix mistakes.

I absolutely love the graphic on this post!

Gary,

The biggest problem is often people that don't want to be photographed. My Mother is that way! 35 years ago at the family campground all her family were there, I pulled out my Rollie and shot 2 bricks of film color in the day and tri-x after dark, Mom never stopped complaining. I gave Mom 480 prints. Last June in Michigan she pulled out about half, I asked about the others she said some wore out the rest were in FL.

Did  mention that was the last time they were all together.

Keep taking snap shots. As to you with your eye never go with out a camera!

Gary, you KNOW how I feel about photography. A lifetime passion. I took clients around yesterday and when the husband broke out his camera (a Canon man--yea!! that's my choice), he and I delved into an in-depth conversation which gave me a window into his past. He was a photography teacher and he and I shared info on what's the latest, best, how-tos, etc. I'm in the midst of writing up an offer for him and his wife, so I might get the incredible opportunity to pick his brain up here at Fishhawk Lake in between endless photo-ops!

(Love that photo you chose...you always nail it).

With a snapshot, we could share our memories to others as well as to our future generations. That’s what makes it so wonderful.

Hi Gary, I am also learning that with the proliferation of photography, the signicance of ones photos become less andless valuable. Try showing the multitudes of the photos and no one wants to sit through the selction process. So we learn that too mnay photos takes the sigificance out of all of them.
