How much time do we network one-on-one? Is it a thing of the past?

By

Just read an excellent blog by Rebecca Foresee asking how much time we spend on social media. That got me to thinking: We spend so much time communicating on websites and communities such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and Activerain:

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT LEAVE US TO NETWORK ONE-ON-ONE?

Or is it a thing of the past? It is certainly more efficient to write a blog that ends up potentially in front of hundreds if not thousands of people. But to me,

IT'S LIKE SENDING OUT BIG OL' HAIL MARIES.

Yes, many times we know people are reading them because we get comments back if not actually have people call us. And because of this, we know we get EXPOSURE, and that all over the World Wide Web.

But are we getting enough business from it to risk not going out there and networking one-on-one?

I find that every time I go out there I get a FEEL for the market and who is doing what. And just in my sphere, I don't want them to forget about me because someone else was connecting with them one-on-one,

AND CHOOSING THAT SOMEONE ELSE OVER ME.

Networking one-on-one has had such a positive effect on my business, I am loath to spend a whole lot of time on social media for this reason. Obviously, I can't ignore it because I want my name to be out there when someone is searching for a real estate broker in my area.

BUT I DON'T WANT TO RELY ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET ME BUSINESS.

Yes, I know there are other ways of marketing that takes a minimum of your time but you have to throw money at it! That includes a better website "mousetrap", or buying leads, advertising on sites such as Zillow (they called me again, but nothing is available in my zip code 93921), sending out mailers, and print advertising. All these add up pretty quickly.

FOR ME, ONE-ON-ONE NETWORKING WORKS.

So in my world, I plan to spend most of my time still on one-on-one networking which has ALWAYS been successful for me.

HOW ABOUT YOU? IS ONE-ON-ONE NETWORKING A THING OF THE PAST FOR YOU?

This is my contest entry for March's "Spring Ideas".

Hella - we do have to seek a balance and nothing compares to meeting someone face to face.

I'm a big fan of Jeffrey Gitomer. In his book "The Little Black Book of Connections" he talks about the importance of networking. Lots of great tips there. I also really like Gary Vaynerchuk. His last two books talk about the personal touch and how important it is. I highly recommend them. "The Thank You Economy" and Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook".

Great points, networking one-on-one is still such an important aspect of the job.  I think that combining social media/blogging with one-on-one networking creates an even stronger basis for finding and helping clients.

Rob #7: Both is good for sure, but with all the information I see people put out there, they must be spending many hours on social media. Where do they find the time if they are also networking one-on-one? There are only so many hours in a day. I want their secret!

Networking is a constant task and it happens unexpectedly. Normally people think it is about giving out your card or telling people you are a REALTOR® and you should do that. It also occurs when you have opportunities to show people the person you are or share something that resonates and it doesn't have to be real estate. I have made speeches to groups about what life is life immediately after cancer treatment and I never tried to sell the audience, yet people called me later and we have done business. Be yourself, show your core values, and yes thell people what you do.

Hella, I do network one-on-one with past clients and prospects. However, the bulk of my business comes from blogging and my website.

It depends on the age bracket how I communicate. I prefer the one on one myself as that is my style but I have learned to adapt.

Hi Hella, This reminds of that age old question about what real estate programs work best. The answer was then as it is now, the one that you use. Sounds like you know what works for you and you should become the best at it you can.

Joe #9: Yes, there are so many ways to connect one-on-one, letting people know who you are.

Randy #10: And thank you for coming over.

Tammie #11: I am so glad that your website and blogging is so successful for you.

Debbie #12: You are so right about age bracket. It can be tougher to reach the young generation one-on-one.

William #13: I really like that comment because one-on-one works best for me and always has. Maybe it also depends on the market you are in, in Carmel-by-the-Sea you need to be connected personally.

Carol #14: That's mine as well. And it's proactive, which I like. Can't stand to wait for people to find me.

Ed and Tracy #15: Whatever strategy works we should do. Yours may not be mine.

I rely on the Google gods and goddesses for my business, and they've never let me down. Every so often I network just because it's nice to talk to a real life human being who is not a seller nor a buyer, LOL.

Hella  I always appreciate when someone finds me using social networks...and they do!  I would say that make for about 25% of my business.  Sixty (60%) of my business is referrals followed by 10% coming from guests that stay at our B & B.  The last 5% would be walk-ins.  An example of current business: one found me on my website and the other is a repeat client.  They bought a home from me 7-8 years ago.  This past year they referred 2 buyers to me and I closed both.  Currently, this client is buying another property with their son and want me to find a buyer for their current home.  It all works...some serves my ego better than others.  Great blog!

Debra #17: Going to events is part of my networking as well, although I'm more of a one-on-one type.

Jill #18: That has been my experience as well.

Elizabeth #19: That is a great place to be.

John #20: My one-on-one networking translates into referrals from them as well even if I haven't done a transaction with them. Am doing one like that now and, with that referred client, I am already talking about another property.

Hella, Ours is a service business and many clients still prefer seeing us in person.  You make an excellent point about "feeling" the market.  Often times that "gut feeling" is most accurate from a personal interaction.  Thank you for the mention in your blog.

Rebecca #22: Guess I have been wondering if I should allocate more time to social media and blogging, but I've gotten such good results from one-on-one networking, that will remain my main focus for awhile. PS. I wonder if not having rainy days has something to do with my heading out the door more?
