3 Tips to Keeping Your Home Healthy You May Not Have Thought About

Keeping our home free of toxins seems to be an ongoing battle from the junk foods to the stuff being tracked in.

Here are 3 ways that you can cut down on the toxins that are invading your home:

Healthy living in South Florida, Wellington green home tips, and tips for healthy homes!1. Keep your shoes at the door. When I lived in Hawaii this was expected. When I lived in Japan it was understood that you leave your shoes at the door. Here in Florida I am happy to say that many families have adopted this lifestyle tip.

Leaving your shoes at the door is a healthy thing to do for your home and family. Shoes track in all kinds of toxins, germs and yucky stuff you really don't need tracked all over your wood, tile and carpet. Many of the toxins that come in on our shoes may not have a smell, such as antifreeze after it has been on your shoes but it certainly has a half-life. Many toxins are airborne when you track them around your house with your shoes on. Also, allergens come into your home this way. If you have allergies this is even more important for you to do.

Set up a shoe rack by your front door where all of your family members and visitors can place their shoes neatly. You can also provide disposable slippers for your guests if you have non slippery floors. Ikea has some nice inexpensive furniture pieces that you can put together to create a shoe storage at your entryway. You can also pick up nice shoe benches at Target. So you don't have to spend a lot of money on your shoe storage rack.

2. Use non toxic cleaners in your home. There are many options available to you in natural cleaners that you can buy in the store now however, if you would also like to save money at the same time there are some very simple solutions.

Good old soapy hot water still does the best cleaning. Vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, lemon oil and orange oils all work well. If you don't like the smell of vinegar put about 10 drops of peppermint oil or lavender oil into your vinegar spray bottle.

Most of the cleaners that you buy in your grocery store are toxic and have half-lives. This mean that even after application the toxins remain on the surface. Don't allow your little ones around these toxins.

3. Open your windows and doors once in a while to let in the air from the outside. Of course, the air outside contains toxins and mold spores but your house being shut up all winter or here in Florida, all summer- has more toxins stored up. Allow the outside air to flow through by opening the doors and windows on opposite sides of the house.

You can also invest in a natural air purifier. There is a great solution I found in Brookstone of a plant in a container that blows out the fresh oxygen it creates. I am sure you could create one yourself with one trip to Lowe's or Home Depot.

I adopted this shoe policy last summer. I simply placed a mat near my front door and placed a pair of my shoes on it. All of my friends, family and neighbors got the hint without having to say a word.

Just like Donny, we’re also using a door mat and we placed and extra indoor slippers for guests.  I know in Asian countries it is considered offensive if you wear you outdoor shoes inside the house.

Joan- They have them on amazon for like $35 for 50 of the slippers.

At dollar days they are even less.

Donny- That is great that everyone caught on. We used to have a sign that I bought in Hawaii that said: Welcome to our home, take off your shoes and stay awhile.

Eric- That is correct. I lived in Japan and Hawaii. I also have traveled to Taiwan and Korea and the Philippines. I don't remember a time I ever wore shoes in a house. And I have had that practice in my own home since I lived in Hawaii.

Tom- Yes, there are also some more expensive and time consuming tips. But I would rather start small and then work up to the bigger projects.

Nestor and Katerina - all the tips make sense and particularly the shoes.  Think about all the places those soles have touched.  When you do you may not want to touch them.

Grant - Yes, I wouldn't want anyone in our home specially my son and grand children to come in contact with those toxins. It's a simple tip but it immensely helps in keeping a home clean and healthy. :)

Katerina-I am a firm supporter of not using shoes used outside on the interior of a home. Glance at some of the places one steps outside. I don't want that in my house.
