Old photographs become Mother’s Day treasures

This is a photograph of my mother, Madge Roberts Kelley, in her senior year of high school in 1931, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was born in June, 1914.

My sister, Lynne, posted this photograph on Facebook. I do not think I had ever seen this picture. In fact, I might not have recognized my own mother in this photograph. My parents were married in 1936.

Save those family photographs for future generations even if you do not care about them.

Roy, I truly TRULY cherish the old photos of generations of our family that Mom has proudly displayed on the walls of her cottage at The Thousand Islands. Such interesting people in our past and it is a gift to find yet another treasure that you didn't know existed. My great aunt sent a photo of my dad proudly displaying a huge pike that he'd caught. I never knew it existed until he left this life. It is so fitting in our home. I use it often....here's to your sister for presenting you with a gift of your mother--a redhead!!! (Yea!) Wishing Dolores a TERRIFIC Mother's Day! (It's the one on the left...I couldn't find it separately....)

I recently found some old family photos that I had not seen in a very long time.  Saving them for future generatiions is so important.  My mother was a teacher in Portsmouth, VA for 33 years and I love the photo of she and I that was taken 45 years ago as we left a "Bring Your Child To Work" event.  Thanks for sharing.

I have to agree with you, Roy. My grandfather was always the person taking the pictures. After he died, we realized we had so few pictures of him.

Thank you very much for your comments. This is a picture of my mother that we think was from the 1930's. It is so important to day and identify family photographs.

Hi Roy... Me too, I cherish the old photos I have. That's a great photo of your mom, how cool. I recently received a few photo of my grand parents from 1919 to 1925. It's like time travel! Enjoy the day. Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's in your life!
