Will We Beat The Record in 2014?

Last year Florida missed the 100 Million tourists a year mark. Not by much, we had 95 Million in 2013, and 89.3 Million in 2012. This year the first quarter came 2% higher than the same period of last year. At 2% we are not going to beat the record, but there are expectations that other quarters would bring more.

100 Million… wow! This is such a huge number. In all senses. It means more jobs, and jobs are great for Florida. It means money to local businesses like hotels, parks, restaurants, marinas, rental car, shops and a cohort of others…

Yes, tourism is not the high paying industry, but better less than nothing and increase of 3.5% to 1,125,300 jobs is a welcome sign of improving economy. Daytona gets a bit more than 8 Million tourists a year, but this number goes from one source to another for a decade now, and I could not verify that it is still correct. Well, if it is, then it means that we are stagnant :)

I read the news about the increase in tourists to Florida, and there was a comment, asking whether governor Rick Scott would claim credit for a terrible winter in the nation. Funny. But not true. Because while 2012 winter was by far not the worst winter on record, the number of tourists to Florida still has increased from 89.3 Million to 95 Million, so while it is politically funny, it is factually wrong.

Good job, governor. Keep it cold and nasty up north… (LOL)

It would not surprise me if they do.  More people working and taking vacations this could be the year.

Hi Jon,

Glad to hear that tourism is up. But even more than that there will always be people moving there and the population is increasing, which means the tourists are staying at least for the winter and making Fla their domicile ( no FLA state income tax). Conversely, here everything just keeps getting more and more expensive and housing, food , water and energy are increasing exponentially.

William - I have already seen a couple of families, moving here from San Diego. Never happened before. Now I understand why.

That's sad

But, Jon, all these tourists are weighing so heavy on Florida that we're starting to sink in the ocean!

That is great for Florida's economy, Jon.  I am curious how they track this number.  I went to Florida two years ago with my boys and Joyce.  We drove down, stayed at my Mom's house and didn't visit any theme parks.  Were we recorded in that 89.3 million?

I know many snowbirds who are staying later this year because of the late snows and cold up north.

While they do contribute to the economy, I don't think they count as "tourists".

Gabe - but because we need them so much for our economy, Floridians probably need to all to go to New York to counter the wight :)

Eric - I do not know how they do it, but I am sure they have a number for tourists, who do not fly, and do not stay in hotels. Of course, how exact it is, is a question.

But they have well developed forumas and do not just count everyone walking to the park, they know that people come and go to different parks, but when you deal with very representative numbers, and they are in millions and millions, the errors margin is tiny...

And it is statistically quite conservative, because of the statistical models used for approximation, with double correlation tables and all other statistical stuff they use. My understanding is that these numbers are not coming from Florida governement...

Lisa - we have not sen that. Our snowbirds had a party in our condo building, like they do every year, and all left on the same day, like they did before.

However, they are tourists, and they are not counted by a day, so how long they state would not affect the number.

Eric - why did you come to Florida then :) Cause that's what so many are coming from. I hope you were not hiding from law enforcement (LOL)

Jon, we know that the bad weather up North this year, brought a lot of people to Florida. With so many things to do to enjoy the sun, water and beaches,Fishing, golfing, boating and shopping. Florida, is a natural attraction so we see an increase each year.

Good post.
