What I remember about my Dad on Father's Day 2014

Happy Father's Day to all the Fathers.

Happy Father's Day to my Dad that passed away a long time ago.

He was a great Daddy to me.  He had a great smile and an easy going personality.  He never met a stranger and everyone loved seeing him and visiting with him.  He was a good listener and a good storyteller too.  I could listen to all his old stories about the past for hours at a time.  He knew how to hold your attention.  His stories were sometimes long.  You never wanted to walk away for a moment, even as a child,  because you might miss a very important part of the story.  I remember folks listening to him intently, hanging on his every word. That was pretty good for an old fella that did not have much education.

Storytelling was a form of entertainment lots of people participated in long ago.  It was also a good way to educate others.  Today, we sit around the television or we are busy on our computers and telephones.  Technology has taken the place of personal one on one storytelling.  I used to love to sit on my Daddy's knee and look into his eyes when he was telling stories.  Somehow, the TV and computer is just not the same.

Fathers, take some time today to look into your children's eyes and tell them a story about YOU.  Give them something wonderful to remember you by, when their Daddy is long gone. :)

Ricki,

What an execellent post!  I lost my Dad three and a half years ago.  But he left me with such great memories.  He, too, never met a stranger and was a quiet man.  But he had a great sense of humor and told stories that kept you holding your stomach.  We are so blessed to have had great fathers like that and on this day we can continue to lift up their wonderful memories.  Take care.

Diana

Ricki, Your post was beautifully written, and a wonderful tribute to your Daddy.  It's interesting how you described sitting on his knee, listening to his stories.  My Daddy told me stories in the same manner as well, and I can't recall ever being bored.

Hi Ricki. We need more Father's to step up and be the Dad's that God called them to be. Story Telling is an art, and it's great that your Dad would share some stories with you.

Hi Jerry,  I so agree with you.  Men need to step up and be the husbands and fathers God wants them to be.  How our world would change if they would.  They would even be happier themselves.  Men who dont take this responsibility seriously miss so much in life.  They dont have to be perfect, just there and show they care.
