On this 4th of July, Happy Independence Day!

As we celebrate the 238th anniversary of the year of our young nation's birth, my thoughts drift to the words of President John Adams, who in a letter to his wife Abigail remarked of the occasion that

"it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

I agree- and may fireworks rain down from sea to shining sea as we celebrate our freedom and independence.

My prayer, however, is that we as a nation lift up "freedom isn't free" as much more than a pithy saying- and that we also pause to give thanks- both for the men whose lives are represented by the golden stars of the WWII Memorial below and others who likewise paid the ultimate price for it, as well as for those whose sight lines toward any sort of rocket's red glare was obstructed by an altogether different kind of bombs bursting in air.

President Adams continued his letter to Mrs. Adams, saying that

"I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States.  Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory.  I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means."

May God continue to bless America- and in the words of a nearby church sign here, may America bless God. May our Lord continue to provide us with men and women brave enough to run toward what so many run from. On this day and every day, may He show us both mercy and favor- continuing to supply us with men and women both physically and mentally courageous- in order that we remain free.

Dennis- what a wonderful July 4th post.  And, I agree, we can't let "freedom isn't free" just roll off our tongues.  Thank goodness for these men and women who were willing to make the sacrifice for what they believed in.

Good Afternoon, Rob:  Thank you for dropping by- and for your comment, kind words and support both today and over the past couple of years!  I remain profoundly cognizant of the fact that any of the small amount of successes folks wish to ascribe to me are due to and owing to folks like yourself that have first trod the paths of committee memberships and fhe like in an effort to give back to others absent expectation of anything in return.

You're a fairly quiet and unassuming guy, Rob Arnold- it's my hope that all the folks working for you appreciate all you bring to the table, and that many will in some way come to know the countless number of hours and effort you dedicate toward making our profession and association better for many whom you'll likely never meet.

Hope you and yours have a safe and restful weekend.  I 'preciate ya!

Good Afternoon, Fred:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment and contribution.  Amen- it's gonna take all we can muster and more to make it through the rest of this guy's term.  Just think (on an empty stomach, that is):  this guy has another 900 or so days to go...

Scary, scary and scarier...

Thank you for the heartfelt post. We should never take freedom for granted. Typically I skip the local celebrations and stay home. This time I was invited to join former clients at their home and they asked me to celebrate the 4th with them and their daughter. By the time the fireworks began, the 3 year old was fast asleep in the stroller. That's when I realized, this celebration is for adults. John Adams was right and it's only fitting that America is an adult birthday party and we should never take they annual celebrations for granted either.  Your post was very insightful.

Hi, Endre':  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment and kind words.  I'm still not sure how the whole "featured" thing works, though.  I've seen some posts that are featured and haven't received any comments at all- blowing my "early popularity brings a feature star later in the day" theory out of the water!

Think there has to be some sort of timing issue in it all as well- my being on Eastern time and 3 hours ahead of ActiveRain HQ time means my early morning posts are late-night posts elsewhere at times, and I'm figuring the ActiveRain feature gods are still snuggled in their beds.

It would be interesting to know how it works..have to check the archives and see if anyone's pulled back the curtains on it yet!

Hi, Patricia:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment and kind words.  I've been accused of being "old-school" on more than one occasion- but I have this wacky view that while some celebrations are fun, some of them are meant to be more commemorative than celebratory.

Take out the solemn remembrances (that number far too few, quite frankly), and there's still plenty of opportunity for fun!
