This is particularly important for those who are relocating and are not familiar with the schools in the community. So how do you find out about the schools in the communities you are thinking about for your new home?
- School Digger is a great website which provides a wealth of information for families with school-age children (test scores, ethnic information, student/teacher ratios and other metrics). Schools are ranked by a number of criteria, which enables parents to compare and contrast the nearby schools, locally as well as on a state level. Many find this especially useful when comparing the high schools. One search function that is really neat is the ability to search for the schools within a certain distance of a particular address.
- Great Schools is another popular site that can help you compare schools as well as to find schools in the communities you prefer. Both private and public schools are listed at all grade levels. There is also information regarding getting prepared for college, tutoring and homework help, and much more.
- School Matters is a useful site for researching schools and comparing them. The data from each school are fairly limited. You can read reviews by parents about the schools, and if you wish, write a review about your child’s school.
- Data lovers will love School Data Direct. You can view performance, spending and demographic information for any state, check out links to state education departments, investigate individual schools and more.
Another recommendation for gathering specific information is to conduct a Google search for the school districts in the town(s) you like, or even the schools themselves. For example, do a search for “Carlsbad Schools” and you will find the Carlsbad Unified School District’s website.
Generally on these district sites you will find a wealth of information for students and parents about scholastic and athletic programs, services for students, awards, the different schools in the district, district and school boundaries, enrollments, etc. There are also links to the websites for individual schools, if they exist.
Once you have done some research, contacting the schools or district offices themselves to learn more is a smart thing to do. You can ask specific questions and likely talk to someone who will have the information you are seeking. If you are going to be in town for a house hunting trip you should make appointments to visit the schools of interest. And often there are parents involved in the parent teacher associations who are willing to talk with parents who may be moving in to the district.
Here are links to the major school districts in Carlsbad, California and surrounding areas:

San Dieguito Union High School District
Rancho Santa Fe School District
Oceanside Unified School District
Del Mar Union School District
Solana Beach School District
San Marcos Unified School District
Schools are highly important considerations in the buying process, and have an impact on property values, and in turn are influenced by the economics of a community. Doing your due diligence when relocating is essential. And with the amount of Internet information available, it is easily done.
