"Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will host a double feature of the new documentary, “From Billions to None: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction.” It will show at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Using sharp CGI animation techniques, “From Billions to None” uncovers the life story of the passenger pigeon up to its extinction and highlights conservation issues today. For centuries, the passenger pigeon was the most populated bird in North America, but was hunted to extinction. This September is the 100th anniversary of the death of the last captive pigeon, officially terminating the species.
Guests are encouraged to stay after the second viewing in October to hear environmental specialist Joel Greenberg speak about his career as a writer, speaker and consultant on this specific extinction. Greenberg is a co-producer for the documentary and author of “A Feathered River Across the Sky: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction.”
Following both programs, the Museum Café will be open for evening service and the jazz trio Cullars Improvisational Rotation will perform. The film presentation and lecture are programmed in conjunction with “The Art of Vanishing,” on view through Oct. 5.
