While here in Charleston, South Carolina, I had a day to kill before tomorrow's Pirate Tour, in celebration of "International Talk Like a Pirate Day!" So, how does a gal spend a free day in Charleston? The answer is, in many ways, if time permits.
On my flight to the Carolinas, I reached into the pocket on the back of the seat in front of me. There is usually something there for a traveler to read, while tapping their toes and lamenting about how flying is more like herding cattle these days!
This month's "U.S. Airways Magazine" just happened to have a 55 page spread on what's happenin' in Charleston. It gives the lowdown on Restaurants, Art, Museums, and the History. Alas, they didn't have a single paragraph about Charleston's pirate history, nor did the article mention that over 40% of enslaved Africans in America, came through Charleston! I'm almost certain the local Chamber of Commerce got to the author, hoping to hide their more colorful dark side!
Anyway, I digress! There was a draw, other than pirates which had me jumping on a jet plane and heading this distance east. I wanted to experience a real swamp. One other than Disneyland's "Pirates of the Caribbean." Today was the big day. I drove to Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, and spent several hours there. There's nothing quite like scenes of ancient Cypress and Oaks, heavy with Spanish Moss hanging from branches like gray beards of old men.
I opted for the Magnolia Plantation combo package, which included (1) The House Tour (2) The Nature Train through the Swamps (3) The From Slavery to Freedom Tour (4) The Nature Boat, and also (5) The Audubon Swamp Tour. All were very educational and intriguing!
I snapped 283 photos today. Over coming days, I will break them down into the various tours mentioned above. My travels are very brisk paced on this trip, but will share the following three. Again, tomorrow is "International Talk Like a Pirate Day!" Please celebrate it heartily!
