How To Make A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Chestplate

Yesterday I posted a tutorial detailing how to make a TMNT shell.

Today I will explain how I made the chestplate to wear with it.

Start by cutting the basic shape from cardboard.  In this case, it was made for a 5 year old child, it is approximately 12" x 15".

Next, divide the chestplate into six pieces.  Use an Xacto knife to cut them apart.

Trace the pieces onto another sheet of cardboard and cut them out, making them a little smaller than the first set.

Use hot glue to put the first set back together, rounding the chestplate just a bit as you go.

Hot glue the second set on top of the first, leaving a space around all pieces.

For side pieces:

I cut two corners from a cereal box and hot glued them to the back of the chestplate.

Paper mache over the front of the chestplate for a smoother finish and to hide the raw cardboard edges.

Paint the entire thing in a light tan color.  Paint inside all crevices with black/dark brown.  Use darker tan, brown and yellow with a dry brush technique randomly over chestplate.

I painted the side pieces tan, and then made some detail with black and then smudged over the black with tan for a worn look.

Add a belt.....and your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle chestplate is complete!

Sybil:  Yes and no.  I found a tutorial on Youtube for the shell (see link to yesterday's post).  There was no mention of a chestplate, so I made one based on a similar design to the shell.

This is a great tutorial, thank you, Sharon Tara ! My son can't wear a mask to school this year, so I am looking for something that would still be obvious -- even without the eye mask. Thank you!

Michael:  My blog is my book, LOL.  Thank you!

Marney:  Thank you!  Makeup is a wonderful option, instead of a mask.  So many wonderful ideas for inspiration online.

LAURA:

If you go to the post about making the shell you will see that I used backpack straps to hold the shell on.

This chestplate is tied in the back using the belt.
